Murray, an internal medicine physician; and the Rev. Carol Howser, spiritual coordinator and ethics officer for Lovejoy Hospice. The panel, said Lovejoy, will discuss topics “which have the potential to soon touch us all either profession- ally or personally.” The program will de- scribe the six ethical dilem- mas and issues evident at the end of life and the ways that cultural differences may influ- ence ethical choices. End-of- life ethical decisions will be discussed as reflected in dif- ferent settings such as home hospice programs, nursing homes and hospitals. Oregon’s Advance Di- rective law has an important and timely role in communi- cating those ethical choices and will be discussed. Reaching an estimated audience of 125,000 people nationwide, the teleconfer- ence will benefit multiple communities, helping people cope with the process of deci- sion making at the end of life. “Lovejoy Hospice is pre- senting a local panel of ex- perts who will discuss the special principles which are the basis for ethical decision making at the end of life in- cluding the crucial role of Oregon’s Advance Directive Law,” said Judi Hill, Lovejoy Hospice outreach coordinator. “It is our goal to have each participant come away with new understanding when applying ethical principles.” The teleconference is produced by HFA, a non- profit organization working to educate health-care profes- sionals and the families they serve on issues relating to illness, loss and grief. The program is co-sponsored by the Foundation for End-of- Life Care, in cooperation with the Adventist Communication Network, Alzheimer’s Asso- ciation, U.S. Administration on Aging, and U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Two young Illinois Valley poets whose works were featured at a recent poetry slam competition earned gift certificates for the Book Exchange and their efforts published in the ‘Illinois Valley News.’ The event, sponsored by The Shining Stars, took place at the Blue Moon Café during the Friday, April 8 Art Walk. All con- testants received participation certificates. First place awards went to Mikhail Thomas, a senior at Illi- nois Valley High School; and Sarah Spring, an Evergreen Ele- mentary fifth grader. Second-place winners were Jesh Hubbard in the high school bracket, and fifth-grader Myana Dhenin and third-grader Brelyn Dhenin tied in the elementary bracket. A poetry slam is a competitive poetry reading in which par- ticipants are judged on the quality of their performance and work. They come so quick like dreams And leave me asking why Why would I ever trust one And know it’s not a lie I searched for any of them To make sure I’m not lost For looking blindly past them May pose a severe cost For a time I knew one of them Could be lost with a knife So close I came so many times To losing my own life I knew I couldn’t do this I knew I must refrain For doing this could bring someone Unforgiving pain So losing life I learned it And causing pain I knew So knowing love completely Was the only blank I drew So if I had just one wish I think it would have to be Let life be lived without the pain And have true love come to me By SARAH SPRING The Cricket Stone The cricket stone is a lucky stone it is your stone it can be what you want it to be it can be blue or green or gold it can be the sea it can be a tree or it can be your heart don’t say you have a heart made out of stone say you have a cricket heart or a lucky heart because I know it’s somewhere inside of you * * * By MIKHAIL THOMAS Of life love and pain These things inside my heart I don’t know what they are For I cannot tell them apart TATTERED TALE - This sign, directing visitors to Ore- gon Caves National Monument, continues to deterio- rate. Located at the north end of Cave Junction on Redwood Hwy., the sign is one of many elements con- tributing to a visitor’s first impression of Illinois Valley. There are no announced plans to replace the shabby sign anytime soon.
