BISCUIT LOGGING PROTEST - Approximately 15 people protesting Fiddler Mt. Bis-
cuit Fire Salvage Sale demonstrated at Hwy. 199 and Eight Dollar Road Wednesday
morning, March 23. On Thursday, Eight Dollar Road was blocked for several hours
by a car turned sideways and a protestor suspended 20 feet in the air. Some 48 peo-
ple have been arrested during the past three weeks in connection with interfering
with an agricultural operation. Cave Junction-based Siskiyou Regional Education
Project is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging logging in old-growth reserves
and roadless areas burned by the 2002 Biscuit Fire. A court decision is still pending.

driven by Shufelt. Her pas-
senger was Marsh.
The two women, who
suffered serious injuries,
said OSP, were taken by
American Medical Re-
sponse (AMR) to Three
Rivers Community Hospital
(TRCH) in Grants Pass.
Both were wearing safety
restraints.
Davis was not wearing
safety restraints and was
critically injured, OSP said.
He was taken by AMR to
TRCH and subsequently
transferred by Mercy Flights
to Oregon Health Sciences
University in Portland due
to the extent of his injuries.
Investigating troopers
were attempting to locate
the owner of the dog to no-
tify him of the incident.
Because of the crash,
Hwy. 199 was closed at the
site for approximately an
hour, and partially closed for
an additional three hours.
Besides IVFD and
AMR, OSP was assisted by
Oregon Dept. of Transporta-
tion and Josephine County
Sheriff’s Office.
OSP Safety Tips
OSP wants to remind
drivers of possible dangers
associated with animals on
or near highways. The fol-
lowing tips are offered as
they relate to animal en-
counters.
*Be attentive at all times,
especially sunset to sunrise, for
potential hazards on or near
roadways.
*When driving in areas
with special signs indicating
the possible presence of ani-
mals or wildlife, use extra cau-
tion because the signs are
posted for a reason.
*Remember that the pres-
ence of any animal also could
mean that others are nearby, or
that the animal’s owner could
be near.
*When you see an animal
or wildlife near or on a road-
way, reduce speed and try to
stay in your lane.
Many serious crashes are
the result of drivers swerving
to avoid wildlife or other obsta-
cles, and they crash into an-
other vehicle or lose control of
their own vehicle.
*Always use vehicle
safety belts because any colli-
sion could result in serious
injuries.
Concentration comes out of a combination
of confidence and hunger.

The American Legion
Auxiliary Girls State is a
nationwide program that
simulates city, county, and
state levels of government.
The program provides oppor-
tunities for high school jun-
iors statewide to become
active participants in the fun-
damentals of democratic self-
government through struc-
tured role-playing.
Experience may include
public speaking while cam-
paigning for various public
offices, drafting and present-
ing bills for passage in the
Girls State legislature; par-
ticipating in mock trials; and
a wide variety of workshops,
and hearing presentations by
some of Oregon’s highest
elected officials.
Delegates to Oregon
Girls State also gain knowl-
edge of the duties, privileges,
rights and responsibilities of
U.S. citizenship.
“Through a variety of
fun activities,” said the auxil-
iary, “they also gain a greater
appreciation of the U.S. Flag,
the sacrifices made by our
veterans, and of our way of
life.”
