Wright ‘Brownie’ Brown Arrangements are pend- ing at Illinois Valley Funeral Home for Cecil Eugene Wright, 52, of Kerby, who died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005 at his home. O’Brien resident Elmer Carl “Brownie” Brown, 77, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. Visitation was held Thursday, Feb. 10 at Illinois Valley Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service was held Friday, Feb. 11 at Laurel Cemetery, also in Cave Junction. Mr. Brown was born on Nov. 9, 1927 in Prophets- town, Ill. He graduated from high school in Toulon, Ill. in 1945, the same year that he joined the U.S. Navy, in which he was trained in en- gineering and refrigeration. During his Navy service he cruised around the world three times. He was honora- bly discharged in 1948. On May 1, 1948 he married the former Lois L. Olson, who survives, and they settled in Toulon. In 1956, with their two sons, they moved to California, where Mr. Brown went to work in construction. He became a foreman and superintendent of free- way construction, and built several freeways in North- ern and Southern California. Their third child, a daughter, was born in 1957. In 1980 the couple relocated to Oregon, where he built his home himself at the base of the Siskiyou Mountains. Besides his wife, Lois Brown, of O’Brien, he is survived by their three chil- dren, Denny, Tony and Joni; Dorothy E. Hersey A memorial service for Selma resident Dorothy Elizabeth Hersey, 97, who died at home Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, was held Tuesday, Feb. 15 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cave Junction Ward. Mrs. Hersey was born on Oct. 19, 1907 in Auburn, Maine. On May 12, 1934 in Augusta, Maine she married Stanley C. Hersey. She lived in Maine for 60 years and in Barefoot Bay, Fla. for 33 years before relocating to Selma 18 months ago. In Barefoot Bay she volunteered as a “Yellow Bird” at Sebastian River Hospital for 28 years after her retirement. In recalling her life, the family said that, “She never met a stranger.” Her hobbies included sewing, reading and caring for others. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Cofoed, of Selma; a son, Ralph Hersey, of Barefoot Bay; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Southern Ore- gon Cremation Services Inc. a sister, Maxine Talbert, of Galesburg, Ill.; a brother, Gene Brown, of Dixon, Ill.; and five grandchildren. Julius Szabo No service is planned for former Illinois Valley resident Julius Szabo, 85, of Grants Pass, who died at home Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005. Mr. Szabo was born on Oct. 10, 1919 in Hungary. He moved to Oregon in 1974 from California. He lived in Illinois Valley for many years, until moving to Grants Pass in 1996. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Szabo, of Grants pass; four stepdaughters; 16 step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Southern Ore- gon Cremation Services. Florence L. Matz A family service will be held for former Cave Junc- tion resident Florence Louise Matz, 90, of Grants Pass, who died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005 in a Grants Pass care center. Mrs. Matz was born on Jan. 15, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to Cave Junction from Gardena, Calif. more than 20 years ago, and lived for the past several years in Grants Pass. She enjoyed volunteer- ing at her church in Califor- nia, and at Oregon Caves National Monument near Cave Junction. She espe- cially enjoyed listening to music. She is survived by two children; a sister, Helen Bannon, of Cave Junction; two grandchildren; and sev- eral great-grandchildren. Southern Oregon Cre- mation Services handled arrangements.
