Airborne
crash on
Hay’s Hill
hurts two
Two women were in-
jured after their car went
off Hwy. 199, became air-
borne and struck a tree
before coming to rest
about 140 feet down a
steep embankment with
substantial damage to the
vehicle Saturday, Feb. 11.
The crash, requiring
heavy extrication, and
which drew numerous
emergency personnel from
several agencies, occurred
at approximately 7:50 a.m.
about half-way down
Hay’s Hill, a few miles
north of Selma.
The injured were iden-
tified by Oregon State Po-
lice as the driver, Brook-
ings resident JoAnn
Slansky Wesbauer, 63; and
her passenger, Fran Wat-
son, age and residence un-
available.
Wesbauer was taken to
Three Rivers Community
Hospital in Grants Pass by
American Medical Re-
sponse. Watson was taken
by Mercy Flights medical
evacuation helicopter to
Providence Hospital in
Medford.
Hwy. 199 was closed
for a time while the heli-
copter landed at the top of
the ill, and the patient was
loaded. Both women were
reported in stable condition
early this week.
OSP issued a warning
to the driver for violation
of the basic rule (driving
too fast for conditions.)
She was driving a 2001
Toyota, said OSP.
Responding to the
scene, besides OSP and
Mercy Flights, were Illi-
nois Valley Fire District,
American Medical Re-
sponse, Rural/Metro Fire
Dept., and Josephine
County Sheriff’s Office.
OSP gave the follow-
ing account:
“The vehicle was
northbound coming down-
hill around a sharp curve,
when it struck the right
side guardrail.
“It bounced back to the
left and veered across both
traffic
lanes
for
southbound traffic. The
vehicle left the west shoul-
der and became airborne as
it sailed over a steep em-
bankment,” striking a tree
on the way down.
“The vehicle traveled
approximately 140 feet
into a ravine before com-
ing to rest on its top.”
Although there have
been numerous wrecks
over the embankment dur-
ing past years, the one Sat-
urday was the first in a
considerably long time.
One observer at the
scene noted, “There’s
enough debris down there
to open a junkyard.”
