ODOT looks
up to retain
clearances
Loss of city water means
‘Forks’ could be dry park
With the loss of city water, indications are that “Forks”
State Park will become “dry.”
The city has notified seven customers south of “second
bridge,” the first span across Hwy. 199 on the south side of
the city, that on or before May 1 their city water service will
be terminated.
The reason is that the city does not have the $35,000
available for work and materiel to continue the service once
pipes under the bridge are removed and rerouted. Oregon
Dept. of Transportation will replace the bridge this year, and
that is the reason for the change.
Among those affected are Oregon State Parks Dept. and
Dillon’s Nursery. After the city council meeting on Monday
night, Feb. 14, it was revealed that the city has received a let-
ter from state parks regarding the situation.
After the meeting adjourned, Councilman Rita Dyer said
that Mayor Tony Paulson had been notified by state parks that
it does not have funds for “Forks” water. Therefore, it said,
plans are to install outhouses; eliminate drinking water; and
draw water for irrigation from Illinois River.
Dyer said that she plans to address the issue to find a solu-
tion, having a dry park is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, City Recorder Jim Polk has notified all seven
water users who will be affected by the service termination
that wells are available to serve them. But the city does not
have the money to install the necessary equipment.
CITY TRIMMING COMPLAINT - Shadowbrook Drive residents Robert & Jan Rodri-
guez, whose property borders E. River Street, are unhappy with the city of Cave
Junction because of tree-trimming performed along E. River without notification.
The trimming was done for traffic safety, according to the city. Rodriguez told the
city council Monday night, Feb. 14 that citizens should be contacted before such
work. He said that he and his wife, had they been notified, would have worked on
solving the complaints and would have had the work done professionally.

musical equipment used by a
Efforts to “stimulate the
state economy by preserving
vertical clearances under
highway overpasses” are
being continued by Oregon
Dept. of Transportation
(ODOT).
Clearance is especially
important to the manufac-
tured home industry and
other businesses that move
loads more than 16 feet tall -
- including generators, trans-
formers and other large ob-
jects -- said ODOT.
Vertical clearance can
be reduced as pavement
overlays build up, said
ODOT. The agency added
that it will grind out build-
up when necessary.
In addition, ODOT said
that new overpasses will be
designed to maintain 17 feet
of clearance, “allowing for
eventual pavement overlays
underneath.”
The agency said that it
is working with the trucking
industry. Clearance long has
been considered a valuable
resource, said ODOT, but it
recently clarified and for-
malized its approach.
