Concerts mark ‘T’ leaving

TOY BOOST - To help Illinois Valley Family Coa-
lition obtain toys for valley children’s Christmas gifts, a
donation of $1,044 has been received from the former
I.V. Citizens Patrol. The group has disbanded, and it was
decided to donate the money in its account to a worthy
cause. Toys will be given away at the coalition center on
E. River Street on Saturday, Dec. 18. The schedule will
be in next week’s issue. (It incorrectly was reported last
week by a Nooseman that the coalition toy program
would be on Christmas Eve.)
The Christmas Eve distribution, using the collection
from the I.V. Bikers Toy Run, will occur at the I.V. Sen-
ior Center, also on E. River Street.
COLLEGE IN$IGHT$ - Parents of high school
students, who want useful information about colleges,
community colleges; and technical, vocational and pri-
vate career schools, can attend any one of three separate
sessions at Illinois Valley High. All will begin at 7 p.m.:
Wednesday, Dec. 8; Thursday, Dec. 9; or Wednesday,
Dec. 15. For more information phone Alan Crews in the

HOLIDAY MUSIC - Music students at Lorna
Byrne Middle School will perform a free, public Christ-
mas concert Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. The Illinois Val-
ley High School concert will be held Thursday, Dec. 16,
also at 7 p.m. T. Lund, director of music for the schools
for the past 12 years, and who will retire Dec. 31, will
direct his pupils. They will be his final performances for
Three Rivers School District.
SEASONAL DISPLAYS - Illinois Valleyites who
have outdoor displays of holiday lights and the like that
the public can view can notify the “Noose” in writing,
and we’ll print the locations. One such display has been
put up by Debbie Wilson, who was part of the
“Christmas House” on Fish Hatchery Road for 10 years.
She now lives in Kerby and has a holiday display of four
large panels at 617 Glendon Road. She’s also featured
artist at Taylor’s Country Store for the Second Friday
Art Walk on Dec. 10. And she’ll help give swing dance
lessons at Taylor’s. (See the ad in this issue).
FIRE FOOD - Stevereno’s Family Restaurant in
Cave Junction will serve an all-you-can eat buffet, a full
turkey dinner, to benefit the Illinois Valley Volunteer
Firefighters Association. The fund-raising event is set for
Saturday, Dec. 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We’re doing
this to give a little something back to those who help us
all year,” said Steve “Stevereno” Anderson. “It’s like a
Christmas present to them,” he said. Check the ad else-
where in this issue.
ALL-CONGREGATIONS GATHERING - An
annual Christmas program for the public, no matter what
church they do or do not attend, will be held Sunday,
Dec. 12. The gathering will begin at 6 p.m. at Commu-
nity Bible Church in Cave Junction. Those who want can
bring their favorite cookies to share.
GRAD PARTY PLAN - Parents and others are
needed to help plan the all-night drug-and-alcohol-free
graduation party for the I.V. High School Class of 2005.
There will be a planning meeting on IVHS Monday,
Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. For more information phone Mary

EVERGREEN PTA - A meeting of the Evergreen
Elementary School PTA will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14
at 2:15 p.m. in the school library. The gathering will in-
clude a drawing for an egret motif quilt, made and do-
nated by Millie Herbold; and which was acquired by
Karen Stiles, who then donated it to the PTA fund-raiser.
The quilt has been displayed recently in a number of val-
ley businesses. Tickets are available at the school; the
winner does not need to be present.
NOTEPAD - New, unwrapped toys are being ac-
cepted at Home Valley Bank to help the I.V. Christmas
Basket Toy Project. Toys for those 12 and younger are
needed. They need to be brought to the bank by Monday,
Dec. 13 … Selma Community Center will hold an all-
day swap meet and bake sale Saturday, Dec. 11. Also as
part of the fund-raiser for the center, there will be a pan-
cake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. … A remand land-use
hearing for Tycer West Subdivision, out Caves Hwy.,
was held by JoCo commissioners Tuesday morning,
Dec. 7 in Grants Pass. An eight-lot subdivision is sought
by Steve Doob, Al Devine, Sally Palmer and Paul Simon
… The Booster Club at I.V. High School is no more. It
was disbanded due to a lack of parental participation …
K-9 Officer “Daum” of Grants Pass Dept. of Public
Safety, who was put to sleep because of illness, was re-
membered during a memorial service Thursday, Dec. 2
in Grants Pass City Hall. The German Shepherd served
four years with Officer Jeff Gaunt ... T-shirt: Has any-

Sandi, will move to Gold
Beach after his official re-
tirement. He plans to work
part time as a consultant to
various schools, as his
health and schedule allow.
Kevin Soon will take
Lund’s job as music direc-
tor. He is scheduled to arrive
this week or next.

‘Rolling meth lab’ found
in pickup after CJ stop
Cave Junction resident
Dennis E. Sims, 41, was
arrested in connection with a
“rolling meth lab” after be-
ing stopped by Deputy Mi-
chael Burke for disobeying
a “Stop” sign, said Jose-
phine Interagency Narcotics
Team (JOINT).
The arrest occurred
shortly after 1 a.m. Wednes-
day, Dec. 1 in the area of W.
Lister Street and N. Kerby
Avenue in Cave Junction,
said Det. Sgt. Ken Selig.
Sims lives on Kerby Ave-
nue, said JOINT.
He said that Sims was
charged with manufacturing,
possession and delivery of a
controlled substance/
methamphetamine; posses-
sion of a precursor sub-
stance/meth; being a felon in
possession of a firearm; and
probation violation.
In addition, because of
the proximity to Evergreen
Elementary School, Sims
was charged with manufac-
turing and delivery of a con-
trolled substance within
1,000 feet of a school.
A deputy stopped Sims,
who was on probation for a
previous drug offense and
driving a pickup truck,
JOINT said.
Sims allowed the dep-
uty to search his vehicle,
JOINT said, and the deputy
found drug manufacturing
paraphernalia, a meth smok-
ing pipe and 8 grams of
meth. It has an approximate
street value of $640, accord-
ing to Selig.
Also located were a
scale, packaging material,
red phosphorus, pseu-
doephedrine and glassware
associated with manufactur-
ing meth, said Selig.
He added that a
loaded .380-caliber handgun
also was found.
In the next week you

the Kerby Water District
to conduct an income
survey for the State of
Oregon Community De-
velopment Block Grant
Program. This is a ran-
dom survey so you may
or may not be contacted.
The Kerby Water Dis-
trict is applying for fund-
ing to design and con-
struct a water delivery
system and part of the
application process re-
quires the current in-
come level before taxes
of Kerby households.
The results will not
identify any single
household and it is very
important for every
household to participate
in the survey for it to be
valid. The Questionnaire
will ask how many peo-
ple reside in your house-
hold and if your income
is above or below a
given number.

be anonymous and we

Burning toxins

Ahh, fall has arrived;
the leaves have turned; rain
is falling (as is the tempera-
ture), and the air has that
familiar smell of burning
plastic and toxins.
Breathe deeply; this is
the country.
Out of the five
neighbors bordering my
home, four welcome the
season with large bonfires of
recyclable plastic, insula-
tion, mattresses, fifth-
wheels, aluminum foil, etc.
Not only to they pollute
the air, but due to rain, they
pollute the soil and drinking
water, and the rivers.
I asked one neighbor
why she was burning plas-
tic, and she stated plainly,
“Everyone does it.” That
makes it alright?
Because she was ada-
mant about her complete
disregard for all life, I
phoned the fire district.
They promptly came and
extinguished the fire, and
warned her that next time,
the Dept. of Environmental
Quality would issue a
$10,000 fine.
I doubt that she will be
polluting the environment,
and her neighbors, or her
family for that matter, any-
more.
Reduce, reuse, recycle,
but never burn toxins. It’s
bad for everyone.
