DOME BAZAAR - Handcrafted items and food
will be among features at the Dome School Winter Ba-
zaar on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5. Hours Satur-
day will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The nonprofit school is located at 9367 Takilma Road.
There will be a breakfast with tostadas, soup, desserts
and beverages. Other attractions will be a raffle, chil-
dren’s activities and live entertainment.
HEALTHY HOLIDAYS - A free workshop to
help participants enjoy the holiday season more fully
will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the
Illinois Valley Family Coalition Center on E. River
Street. Dr. Dorothea Hover-Kramer, a licensed psy-
chologist and clinical nurse specialist, will teach par-
ticipants how to spot self-defeating cultural holiday
patterns; how to know when they’re causing them-
selves stress; how to eliminate negative self-talk, how
to create a more loving, genuine holiday period; and
how to release unwanted stress quickly and effec-

HIGHER ED INFO - Three separate sessions for
parents of high school students to gain information
about colleges, community colleges; and technical,
vocational and private career schools will be held at
Illinois Valley High School. Parents can attend any
one of the sessions, which all will begin at 7 p.m.:
Wednesday, Dec. 8; Thursday, Dec. 9; or Wednesday,

LIGHT UP A LIFE - Music and inspirational read-
ings, plus a recitation noting loved ones who have died,
will be parts of the annual Light Up A Life Celebration
in Cave Junction through Lovejoy Hospice. The obser-
vance will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7 beginning at 7 p.m.
in Immanuel United Methodist Church, 200 W. Watkins
St. in Cave Junction, across from Shop Smart. The gath-
ering, with a special commemorative memory tree, also
will include miniature angels for those meeting to re-
member the people who have been special in their lives.
YULE TUNES - Free and public Christmas con-
certs will be presented by music students at Lorna Byrne
Middle School and Illinois Valley High School on
Thursdays, Dec. 9 and 16 respectively. T. Lund, who
will retire Dec. 31, will direct his pupils. Watch the
“Noose” for details of the concerts showcasing students’
musical talents.
NOTEPAD - Illinois River Valley Arts Council
will meet Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at Creative Space,

put to sleep after a previously unknown intestinal tract
problem surfaced in an emergency medical situation on
Saturday, Nov. 27. At his passing the highly recognized
German shepherd was surrounded by loved ones includ-
ing his partner, Officer Jeff Gaunt … Pearl Harbor Day
will be observed Tuesday, Dec. 7, although the “Noose”
wasn’t notified of any special ceremonies here ...

WALL FIRE - Illinois Valley firefighters responded to a
smoke-filled mobile home at 701 Caves Hwy. behind
fire station 1 Monday afternoon, Nov. 29. They found
that an apparently faulty electrical outlet had caused a
fire inside a wall. No injuries were reported.

three trees they planned to
sell would decay so much
that it would not be worth
cutting, and survey teams
are finding this to be true.
“Overall it’s going to be
less than we predicted,” said
Tom Link, salvage project
manager.
The forest service used
new Bush Administration
rules in hopes of accelerat-
ing cutting of Biscuit timber
before it lost value. But the
process has been slow, and
lawsuits have stalled log-
ging in older forest reserves
set aside for wildlife.
Crews planning timber
sales also have begun pass-
ing over stands where com-
mercial value is marginal.
Federal figures show
that by 2006, logging would
cost more than it’s worth.
Activists caused an at-
mosphere in which timely
logging was nearly impossi-
ble because of their opposi-
tion and threats of legal ac-
tion, according to Chris
West, of the American For-
est Resource Council.
“Their goal in life is to
obstruct,” he said. “The sim-
ple fact is, if we’d jumped
on it early, we would have
had more money to do that
restoration that would have
benefited wildlife and the
communities.”
U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith
(R-Ore.) has threatened to
introduce legislation to keep
lawsuits from holding up
logging.
But even if he does,
officials have at most one
more year to sell the timber
killed by the fire.

Strategies for improving
‘Blue Holidays’ Dec. 13
A free, public program
on “Blue Holidays, Grief
and Loss Survival Strategies
for the Winter Holidays”
will be presented Monday,
Dec. 13 by Joe Momyer,
bereavement counselor for
Lovejoy Hospice, and other
bereavement team members.
The program will be
held at Lovejoy Hospice,
939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants
Pass, in the conference room
from noon until 1 p.m.
At this time, the be-
reavement counselor will
offer information and sug-
gestions for coping with the
holiday activities and expec-
tations for those experienc-
ing grief and the loss of a
loved one.
Anyone can attend, in-
cluding supervisors, care-
givers, counselors, and
members of clergy. Family
members are especially en-
courages to attend. Guests
are encouraged to bring their
own lunch. Beverages and a
dessert will be provided.
