Page 4 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, November 24, 2004 Kristal Nehf exemplifies busy life of a pastor’s wife St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church The Advent season will begin Sunday, Nov. 28, and the Mass will in- clude blessing the Advent Wreath and lighting the first candle. From Matthew we will read the warning by Jesus, “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Each year at this time we do self-checks to see if our lives are in order so that we will be prepared for Christ’s coming. Seventh-day Adventist Operation Cheer for the 701st Infantry Division in Iraq is bringing joy to the hearts of those at the Cave Junction Seventh-day Adventist Church. Small boxes of good- ies, letters and cards have been sent to the lonely sol- diers fighting for our free- doms in Iraq. The pastor’s son, Capt. Stephen Hyland, who vis- ited the valley in August, said, “One of our greatest enemies, that we face every day, is loneliness. “These letters and little boxes tell us that someone at home cares and is pray- ing for us. They bring sun- shine into our dark world.” Senior Nutrition Menu Sponsored by 592-2126, 474-5440 Meals are served in the CJ County Bldg. KBCC - LP 107.9 FM Illinois Valley’s only Christian radio station By CHRISTINA HILL Correspondent Illinois Valley boasts a handful of unique women able to handle just about anything thrown their way. Twenty-six-year-old Kristal Nehf is one. Nehf is the mother of her 3-year-old daughter, Acacia, and her 15-month- old son, Elijah. Her hus- band, Jeremy Nehf, is pastor of Caves Christian Fellow- ship in Kerby. Jeremy and Kristal met while on a mission trip in Mexico and began dating. Kristal, who lived in Medford, said that she called Cave Junction home after returning from their honeymoon. The new “Mrs. Nehf” joked at the combination of her first name with her new last name. “Whenever I say my name, people think I’m say- ing ‘crystal meth’,” she said. “I think it’s funny,” she said with a laugh. “I just tell people that God had a sense of humor when he picked my name.” After being married for nearly five years, Kristal has heard them all, too. In fact, the number of jokes almost amounts to the number of different places their church has been since starting. “Jeremy started the church while we were still dating,” she said. “At first it was at a friend’s house, and then we held it at a park when it was warm, then at the Junction Inn and back to the park in the summer,” Nehf said. After moving several more times, the church has finally settled for a while, she said. “We remodeled the old Casper’s building,” she said. “I guess it used to be a biker shop and just about every- thing else under the Sun, but we really cleaned the place up and we have been there for a year now,” said Nehf. Jeremy’s got church, and he works during the week, so we rarely ever see each other,” Kristal said. “It’s crazy, but some- how God always gives me the strength to do it all,” she said. “I reach a point when I feel like I can’t physically do it anymore, but I’ll just pray, ‘God please give me the strength,’ and He’ll give me the strength to go five more hours,” Kristal said. She added that “if it weren’t for the grace of God,” she either couldn’t do it or she would be the grumpiest person in the world. Her busy day starts at 5 a.m., and usually ends around 11 p.m. “I get up early, have devotions, work until the kids wake up; then I’ll put work down and I’m mommy,” Kristal said. During her children’s naps, she manages to squeeze in more work, tidy the house and make dinner. “Three nights a week there’s church; then the other nights Jeremy works late, and of course there’s church on Sunday,” Kristal said. On Tuesdays, Kristal said she and Jeremy head the youth group. Then there’s Bible study on Wednesday nights and the women’s Bible study on Thursday nights, which Kristal leads. “I just have to keep trucking,” she said. “God totally gives me the strength and the grace to do it all -- but I have to do it minute-by-minute,” Kristal concluded.
