to RCC linked
to bond issue

RVMC in top 100 cardiovascular hospitals
Rogue Valley Medical
Center in Medford has
been named one of the na-
tion’s Top 100 Cardiovas-
cular Hospitals for 2004,
and is the only Oregon
hospital to make the list.
This prestigious na-
tional honor is based on
data gathered for the an-
nual Solucient 100 Top
Hospitals: Cardiovascular
Benchmarks for Success
study in the Oct. 25 issue
of “Modern Healthcare.”
The study specifically
evaluated the following
patient groups: bypass sur-
gery, coronary artery stent
placement, heart attack and
congestive heart failure.
Hospitals do not apply for
the honor -- it is based
solely on an independent
analysis of outcome data.
RVMC said that it of-
fers the most comprehen-
sive cardiac care program
in the region, serving pa-
tients from nine counties
across Southern Oregon
and Northern California.
Last year, 634 open-
heart surgeries, more than
800 stent placements and
more than 8,300 cath lab
procedures were per-
formed at RVMC, and 84
patients received a new
cardiac option, External
Counter Pulsation (ECP).
RVMC has achieved
Top 100 status in cardiac
care four times, in 2000,
2001, 2002 and 2004.
Cardiovascular disease
is the number-one killer in
the United States. Accord-
ing to Solucient, if all the
hospitals in the study per-
formed at the same level as
the Top 100 facilities:
*4,200 more cardiac
patients would survive
each year.
*1,600 more cardiac
patients would be compli-
cation-free.
*Post-operative infec-
tion rates would drop as
much as 35 percent.
*Average cardiac-
related costs would drop
nearly 13 percent.
RVMC is part of As-
ante Health System.
A $750,000 condi-
tional grant from Meyer
Memorial Trust to pay a
portion of remodeling
costs at White City has
been approved for accep-
tance by the Rogue Com-
munity College Board of
Education.
RCC purchased a for-
mer electronics plant in
White City for $3 million
through issuing certificates
of participation.
The building contains
103,000 square feet of
space. After remodeling,
the RCC facility could
open in September 2005.
Located on 17 acres in
Jackson County’s manu-
facturing and industrial
center, the Table Rock
Campus is planned to
serve as a regional training
center. It will house RCC’s
professional technical and
heavy industrial programs
such as construction and
diesel technology, elec-
tronics, manufacturing, fire
science and public safety.
It also will include
computer labs, classrooms,
distance-learning facilities,
and a library.
The Meyer Trust grant
is the largest ever pre-
sented to a community col-
lege. Receipt of the grant
hinges on RCC raising the
remainder of needed funds
-- $24 million -- through a
Nov. 2 election for a bond
levy in Jackson County.
