He attended the former
Kerby Union High School.
He joined the U.S.
Navy SeaBees and served

“Persistence” will be the
theme on the 29th Sunday in
Ordinary Time.
In Exodus, Joshua won
the battle against Amalek and
his people, as long as Moses,
who was on a hill, kept his
hands raised.
In 2 Timothy, Paul said,
“I charge you … to be persis-
tent whether it is convenient
or inconvenient; convince,
reprimand, encourage through
all patience and teaching.”

Leprosy. A much-feared
disease in Biblical times. So
when Jesus cured 10 lepers, it
was a miracle.
But only one returned,
praising God loudly. This
should be an example.

Free nicotine patches offered by DHS
to help folks end their smoking habit
Sioux City, Iowa. She mar-
ried John E. Mitchell in
Vancouver, Wash. in 1944.
He died in 1992.
She lived in the Cave
Junction area 15 to 20
years before moving to
Grants Pass; then relocated
to Cottage Grove 14 years
ago. She was a home-
maker, who enjoyed play-
ing cards other games of
chance.
She is survived by six
sons, Marvin Mitchell,
Alvin Mitchell and Tom
Mitchell, all of Grants
Pass, Tony Mitchell, of
Yreka, Calif., Robert
Mitchell, of Cottage
Grove, and Bill Mitchell,
of Bend, Ore.; five daugh-
ters, Louise Kienel and
Lila Faulkner, both of
Myrtle Creek, Ore., Cheryl
Johnson, Tigard, Ore.,
Evelyn Gilmore, Creswell,
Ore., and Stephanie Ame-
lung, of Rice Hill, Ore.;
and 28 grandchildren.
Arrangements were
handled by Smith-Lund-
Mills.
For the first time, all
smokers who phone Ore-
gon’s tobacco Quit Line
will be offered free nico-
tine replacement patches to
help them quit smoking.
Public health officials
in the Oregon Dept. of Hu-
man Services (DHS) made
the announcement.
Two weeks worth of
patches, shown to increase
success in quitting to-
bacco, will be provided
while supplies last.
“Nicotine replacement
therapy, such as patches,
greatly increases the prob-
ability that a smoker or
chewer will successfully
quit,” said Dr. Mel Kohn,
DHS epidemiologist.
“The tobacco industry
makes sure there is enough
nicotine in every cigarette
to keep smokers hooked,”
Kohn said. “Patches gradu-
ally reduce the amount of
nicotine in the bloodstream
during a six- to eight-
week treatment period.
This gradual approach
really helps people suc-
cessfully quit.”
Kohn continued,
“Tobacco use costs Orego-
nians approximately $1.8
billion a year in direct
costs of medical care and
indirect costs due to early
death and disability.”
Oregonian tobacco
users interested in receiv-
ing free patches should
phone the toll-free Oregon
Tobacco Quit Line at (877)
270-STOP (7867) or (877)
266-NO FUME (3863).
‘Third Bridge’ to be named after D. Potts
A request to name the
Grants Pass Parkway
Bridge in Grants Pass in
honor of Eugene “Debbs”
Potts has been approved by
the Oregon Transportation
Commission (OTC).
Known locally as
“Third Bridge,” the Hwy.
199 structure spans the
Rogue River.
Potts served Oregon
45 years, said OTC, in-
cluding his work as chair-
man of the Oregon Lottery
Commission, and a term as
Grants Pass mayor.
He served five terms
as a state senator from Jo-
sephine County, including
three as Senate president.
The Josephine County
Historical Society made
the formal request to name
the bridge in honor of
Potts. The society has
scheduled Dec. 10, which
is Potts’ birthdate, for a
dedication ceremony,
which many will attend.
OTC made an excep-
tion to its policy of not
naming highway facilities
after individuals because
Potts made a lasting, state-
wide contribution with a
significant historical effect
during his 45 years of pub-
lic service, OTC said.
