Feldcamp
running for
Congress
Supporting the timber
industry and recruiting
new companies to bring
jobs to Oregon are parts of
Jim Feldkamp’s campaign
for the office of Oregon
congressman.
He’s running against
incumbent Peter DeFazio.
“I was born in Rose-
burg and grew up working
in a third-generation fam-
ily business, learning the
values of family, work and
responsibility,” said Feld-
kamp.
“I joined the U.S.
Navy out of college and
flew more than 30 mis-
sions over Iraq during Op-
eration Desert Storm,” he
said. “I have been where
many of our troops are
now and understand the
dangers they face.
“After leaving active
duty I joined the FBI,
where I was a special agent
assigned to counterterror-
ism,” he said.
“I hunted the terrorists
who threaten us,” said
Feldkamp. “I know what
must be done to protect
America.”
The candidate is a
commander in the U.S.
Naval Reserve, a graduate
of Oregon State University
at Corvallis, an Eagle
Scout and member of Vet-
erans of Foreign Wars.
Oregon ag
exports up
The value of Oregon
exports has increased
nearly 10 percent during
the first half of 2004, said
the U.S. Dept. of Com-
merce’s Office of Trade &
Economic Analysis.
But the export of Ore-
gon agricultural products
specifically has done even
better -- nearly a 25 per-
cent rise from a year ago,
said Oregon Dept. of Agri-
culture (ODA).
More than 40 percent
of Oregon’s ag products
are exported, generating
new dollars to the state
from other countries, ODA
reported.
Indications are that the
state’s ag exports are
worth nearly $2 billion per
year. In addition, Oregon
exports some $2.3 billion
per year worth of computer
and electronic products.

Children’s eye-care noted
One in four children
has a vision problem, yet
only 14 percent receive a
comprehensive eye exam
before entering school.
Undetected sight prob-
lems can lead to difficul-
ties in the classroom and in
sports.
Both statements are by
the American Optometric
Physicians Association.
Said Julie Danielson,
Medford area optometric
physician, “In fact, we rec-
ommend having their eyes
checked when they are 6
months, 3- and 5-years-
old. If vision problems are
caught early, it can make
all the difference in a
child’s life.”
Vision problems chil-
dren can have include:
*Crossed eyes.
*Focusing problems.
*Hand-eye coordina-
tion problems.
*Lazy eye, formally
known as amblyopia.
*Nearsightedness, far-
sightedness or astigma-
tism.
Parents should look for
the following warning
signs in their child:
*Covering one eye
when looking at something
up close.
*Squinting.
*Sitting close to a TV.
*Clumsiness.
*Tilting or turning the
head.
*Avoiding eye contact
or reading.
*Reversing letters or
transposing numbers when
writing.
*Poor posture when
doing
schoolwork
(slumping).
*Complaints about
headaches.
If a child needs a vi-
sion correction, frames that
fit well are now made es-
pecially for children. And
even the very young can be
fitted with contact lenses.
For parents who can-
not afford to take their
child in for an eye exam,
scholarships are available
through the Oregon Foun-
dation for Vision Aware-
ness (OFVA). It can be
reached at (503) 452-0403

Two of four motorcy-
clists in a crash with a car
near Shady Cove have
died, and another was in-
jured, according to Oregon
State Police.
OSP identified one
victim as Rogue River
resident David Tabor, 54,
who was pronounced dead
at the scene.
In addition, Dennis
and Sharon Vitacco, 57
and 50, were riding on the
same cycle. Dennis Vi-
tacco died after being air-
lifted to a hospital, OSP
reported.
The agency gave the
following account:
Tabor was riding on
Hwy. 62, approximately
seven miles north of Shady
Cove. His fellow cyclists
were Maggie James, 20. of
Central Point; and the Vi-
tacco couple.
The car, a 1993 Mazda
two-door, was driven by
Reagan De Shane, 28, of
Shady Cove; his passenger
was Paul Rexius, 32, of
Medford. They were not
reported injured, and nei-
ther was James.
The Vitaccos were
flown by Mercy Flights
medical helicopter to Em-
manuel Hospital in Port-
land.
OSP added that the
driver of the southbound
car lost control and went
sideways onto the lane for
northbound traffic, striking
the motorcycles. Alcohol
does not appear to be a
factor, OSP said.
