City water options viewed
because of E. Fork bridge
Various solutions are being studied by the city of Cave
Junction in connection with a replacement bridge and its
effect on a city water line.
A workshop on the matter was held Tuesday night,
Sept. 7; another was held Tuesday evening, Sept. 14 in city
hall.
The work by Oregon Dept. of Transportation, to replace
the bridge over the East Fork of Illinois River, will affect
the water lines for Illinois River “Forks” State Park and six
residences.
Several solutions have been proposed by Gary Biggs,
city Public Works supervisor. Costs could range from
$12,000 to $85,000 depending on which option is chosen.
Further discussion was to occur the 21st.
John L. Iker
No service is planned
for Cave Junction resident
John Levi Iker, 85, who
died in a house fire on
Takilma Road on Satur-
day, Aug. 28, 2004.
Southern Oregon Cre-
mation Services is in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Iker was born on
March 23, 1919 in Clay-
ton, N.M. The family
moved to Oklahoma when
he was a child, and he
graduated from high
school near Duncan, Okla.
The family moved to
California during the De-
pression, and Mr. Iker ob-
tained a job at Lockheed
Aircraft in Burbank, Calif.
as an aircraft assembler.
During World War II,
he joined the U.S. Navy
and was stationed in Long
Beach, Calif. as an avia-
tion mechanic. After the
war he returned to Lock-
heed, where he held posi-
tions in the Field Service,
Planning, and Purchasing
departments.
While in Field Service,
he worked in Newfound-
land, the Azores and Mid-
way Island, and the United
States.
He married Charlotte
Faye Pennington on Sept.
2, 1966. He retired from
Lockheed in 1973, and
moved to Cave Junction
with his family.
He was known for his
strong love for aviation.
He earned a pilot’s license
in the 1940s, and owned
several different aircraft
until his retirement. After a
hurricane destroyed a
Cessna he owned, while
working in Pennsylvania,
he rebuilt it himself.
Surviving are his wife,
Charlotte; and a son, John
Daniel Iker, both of Cave
Junction.
OLD-FASHIONED BARN-RAISING - Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-
ter-day Saints Cave Junction Ward are building a barn for one of their members in
rural Cave Junction. Reminiscent of early day community barn-raisings, the volun-
teer project is nearing completion.
‘Solution Joe’ offers peace to city
An unusual interlude
that included a man sing-
ing the first two lines of
“God Bless America” oc-
curred at the end of the
Cave Junction City Coun-
cil meeting in city hall
Monday evening, Sept. 13.
The man, who identi-
fied himself as “Solution
Joe,” claimed to have been
sent from Washington,
D.C. After singing to the
council and audience, his
primary theme seemed to
be bringing peace and re-
ducing crime.
He claimed to be able
to reduce crime by 25 per-
cent in the city, but left
before stating if he repre-
sented a group or how he
would reduce crime.
At one point, he told
the council: “I’m sorry, but
you’re just not as good
Municipal Court fines lagging
Three defendants failed
to show up for the city of
Cave Junction’s Municipal
Court monthly session and
were found guilty by de-
fault of six traffic offenses.
So noted City Recorder
Jim Polk during the city
council meeting in city hall
Monday night, Sept. 13.
Polk said that $1,538 in
fines have been assessed,
and that $329 was paid
during August.
And $800 in impound
fees were paid during the
month.
From July 1 through
August, the city has col-
lected $637 in fines and
collected $1,300 impound
fees, Polk reported.
‘Bud’ Squire
There will be a memo-
rial gathering for former
Illinois Valley resident
Bert “Bud” Elwood
Squire, 83, who died in a
Grants Pass nursing home
on Sept. 9, 2004 on his
83rd birthday.
The gathering will be
held Saturday, Sept. 18
from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1730
N.W. Highland Ave. in
Grants Pass.
Mr. Squire was born
Sept. 9, 1921 on a Thomp-
son Creek homestead in
Selma. He graduated from
Kerby Union High School
in 1939, and served in the
U.S. Navy during World
War II. He received three
Purple Hearts.
He owned and oper-
ated a co-op in Takilma
from 1955 to 1970, when
he semi-retired.
Survivors include a
sister, Juanita Buell,
Grants Pass; a brother, E.
G. “Gilly” Squire, Cave
Junction; a stepdaughter,
Margaret Keyte, Grants
Pass; and many nieces and
nephews.
Southern Oregon Cre-
mation Services is in
charge of arrangements.
City permits
Eight over-the-counter
permits were issued during
August by the city plan-
ning commission, the Cave
Junction City Council
learned.
Information provided
councilmen during their
meeting Monday night,
Sept. 13 listed three fence
permits, two zoning clear-
ances for manufactured
homes in a mobile home
park, two zoning clear-
ances for decks, and one
for a new home.
looking as me. But Jesus
loves you anyway.”
“Solution Joe” said that
he wants to find out what
people think is the biggest
problem in the city, but
noted that he will be “in
and out of the city for the
next three months,” and
that he “is harder to con-
tact than most senators and
governors.”
He ended his rambling
harangue by saying, “God
bless you. You are decent
people, and I’m proud of
you.”

To all Illinois Valley residents and others who have enjoyed swimming on
our property on Rockydale Road. First, we would like to thank all the nice
families. Young kids, people who bring their dogs and let them play and the
other people who are kind enough to gather trash. Thank you…
Second, hats off to those who use our road as a party place and trash
collection area. Thank you for throwing rocks at our employees, tearing down
our signs, yelling, hand gestures… Thank you for blocking our road during
business hours and then refusing to move so that our trucks can get by. We
love the motorcycles and vehicles all over our rock products in the middle of
the night keeping a lot of people awake at two in the morning. Guess what?
People do live back here. It is a private road… YOU HAVE BEEN OUR
GUESTS at 1711 Rockydale Road for forty five years enjoying the nice
swimming area. Thank you.
The swimming season has come to a close and children have gone back
to school. We are replacing all of our signs and a gate has been installed. The
road is to be used for business customers and residents. As of September 15,
2004 any vehicle parked on our property will be towed at your expense. This
is your legal notification. No trespassing.
It is with great sadness and expense we are forced to lock our road
because of others. For those who will miss this swimming area, we are sorry.
The bad apples spoiled forty five years of swimming for free at our place.
