No, I’m from West Co- vina. I graduated High School in California. I was born in Santa Monica. My grandpa used to take me fishing up here. I always liked it here, but I never thought I would live here. Fortunately, when my wife and I retired from maintenance management in Calif., I went to work for the county in 1991 as an assis- tant Park Ranger for a few years, then as a groundskeeper at Lake Selmac. Do you come from a large family? Well, I have two brothers and a sister. It’s funny be- cause my mother married a man with the same last name so none of us had to change our names. My sister Virginia and brother Robert are in Wisconsin, and my oldest brother Edward is in Mission Viejo, Calif. We had an or- ange orchard and used to hang out together and pick or- anges. We also raised rabbits and chickens. I have a large family of my own. I had 5 kids with my first wife and five with my second wife Barbara Carlson. How long have you been married? I’ve been married to my wife Barbara for 18 years. We have four great-great grandchildren and 28 grandkids. What is your most memorable experience as a youth? This is a funny story. My grandpa took me fishing on the Smith River in 1946 and I caught 26 salmon between 15 and 20 pounds. I’ll never forget because my grandfa- ther was a real-estate broker, and had friends with us who were lawyers and brokers. My granddad got upset be- cause I caught more fish than all of them. That was such a good memory; I was 13 years old then. Are you a veteran? Yes, I’m a Korean War veteran. I served seven years in the Navy as a Water Tender; that’s someone who makes fresh water. I was 17 when I joined and went ac- tive duty when I turned 18. I was ready to go to Korea and they sent me to Europe instead. Of course, I was still in that conflict. I’ve been to Athens, Naples, and many other countries. I’ve seen a lot. The neatest thing I saw was in the Red Sea when they turned around an aircraft carrier. We also experienced several hurricanes. What was it like working at Lake Selmac? Well, I saw the radio control planes come to the lake for the first time, and I worked with those folks. I saw the Iron Horse Rodeo when it began, and I’ve lived at the lake ever since. There are a lot of nice people that go through that park. There are a lot of family reunions that come there. I really enjoyed meeting people and talking to them. I’ve met people from India, Spain, Puerto Rico, France, England, Canada, you name it. It’s amazing how many people I’ve met. People had problems of all kinds. Most of the time I was able to help. What is your favorite ice cream? Chocolate and pistachio.
