A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Redwood Christian Church in Grants Pass, with Pastor Kevin Bates officiating. Mr. McCollum was born on March 2, 1928 in Grants Pass. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1947. He worked for 25 years as head elec- trician at U.S. Forest In- dustries on M Street until its closure in 2003. In 1986, he married the former Lois Lee Kight at St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Cave Junction. He was a member of Redwood Christian Church and worked with the church’s drama depart- ment. He also was active in Bible studies and helped with many projects. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, drama, his church friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Lois McCollum, of Selma; two sons, Allen McCollum, of Coos Bay, and Robert “Bob” McCollum, of Azalea; a daughter, Peggy McAllister, of Grants Pass; a step-daughter, Pam Gute- kunst, of Selma; a step- son, Michael Morse of Sacramento; 10 grandchil- dren; 17 great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Kenneth McCollum . laughter and good times.” He began his survey- ing/engineering firm in 1988. That firm is now known as Earl, Mason, & Stanfield Inc. He was a member of Idaho Land Surveyors and was li- censed in five states. Mr. Earl grew up in Glendale, Calif. and Cave Junction, graduating from Illinois Valley High School in 1965. He joined the U.S. Air Force in ‘65, where he served in Texas, becoming a K-9 dog han- dler and then served two tours of duty guarding Air Force bases in Vietnam. He was a member of the Vietnam K-9 Dog Handler Association. When he became a civilian after his military service, he attended South- ern Oregon State College in Ashland, and then trans- ferred to Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, where he earned his associate’s degree in sur- veying and highway engi- neering, and then his bachelor’s degree in engi- neering. He and his wife moved to Caldwell in 1988, where he started his engineering firm. Remembrances can be sent to Hope House at P.O. Box 550, Marsing, Idaho, a home for underprivileged children. He leaves behind his wife, Rita Hannon Earl; daughter, Sarah Patchin; sisters Sharon Ann Miller, Katherine Gay Shinkle, and Carla Jean Duncan; a brother, Russell Elwin Earl; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean West Duncan; step-father, George Alton Duncan; and his father, Elwin Earl. Juanita O. Gates Juanita O. Gates, 87, of Medford, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 1974 E. McAndrews in Medford. Mrs. Gates was born on Nov. 3, 1916 in Oregon City, Ore. Said her family, “Her passion in life was to teach children about the love of God. For more than 60 years she taught Sunday School classes or assisted in some way. She also en- joyed doing crafts, and always had a hand-made card for somebody’s spe- cial day.” She is survived by four children: Jerry Gates, of Cave Junction, Melvin Gates, of Brookings, Joy (Gates) Mortimore, of Medford, and William Gates, of Central Point. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two children and one grandson. Earl Former Cave Junction resident Gerald “Gerry” Linden Earl, 57, of Cald- well, Idaho died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at a hospital in Boise, Utah of natural causes. A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 9 at Canyon Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Greg Bul- lock of Nampa officiating. The family received friends at Dakan Funeral Chapel in Caldwell on Sunday, Aug. 8. Mr. Earl was born on Dec. 10, 1946 in Burbank, Calif. to Elwin and Dona West Earl. He and the for- mer Rita Hannon married on Oct. 4, 1974 in Reno, Nev., and made their first home in Cave Junction. They also lived in Klamath Falls, John Day, and Poca- tello, Idaho, and settled in Caldwell.
