When they called the final number and it wasn’t mine, I was so relieved,” she said. Of course, there were still more cuts to make, since there were still 40 contestants and only 32 slots. After judges re- viewed videos of the com- petition, they selected the final 32. On the 3rd and 4th of August, judges will again narrow the contestants by half during the Southern Oregon Idol competition. On Wednesday, Aug. 4, Crocker is to sing “Without You,” by the “Dixie Chicks;” one of four songs she was asked to select before competing. After that, the field will be narrowed to 16 for the second night of compe- tition. If she is selected to continue, she will sing, “At Last,” written by Jazz artist Etta James. The final leg of her journey to stardom would occur on Saturday, Aug. 7. At this point, there will be only eight performers, who will be judged by elec- tronic audience vote. Each contestant is to perform a current, popular radio song. Crocker hopes to sing, “Don’t Tell Me,” by her favorite singer, Avril Lavigne. Providing she is se- lected, she will sing a sec- ond song, “Only Hope,” by Mandy Moore. “It’s one of my favor- ites,” said Crocker. “I think it fits my voice, al- though her voice is a little higher than mine. When I sing it, I picture myself in a long flowing dress. It also fits my age. I think it’s important to pick an age- appropriate song.” If she wins overall, she will present an encore per- formance. She isn’t certain what she will sing. Southern Oregon Idol is a prelude to performing for a possible spot on the TV show, “American Idol.” If Crocker places first at the Craterian Thea- ter, she will get a five-day stay for two in Los Ange- les, where she will be guaranteed an audition with an “American Idol” producer. “I think there will be 10,000 other contestants at that competition. However, they won’t be guaranteed an audition in front of the producer. The majority of auditions won’t get to do that,” said her mother. “It’s been my dream to be able to have my voice heard throughout the world. If not the world, at least the USA,” said Crocker. “It would be amazing if I win it all,” she said. “My goal is to be heard. If I ever were to get a con- tract to make a CD, and I sold just one; if I touch that person in some way, I will have accomplished my goal,” she said. Illinois Valley Branch Library 209 W. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church We all try to save for a rainy day. Whether it’s a little extra in the bank or buying stocks; we all like to feel financially secure. Should this be a prior- ity, or should we be think- ing more about what we can do for a less fortunate neighbor, or someone we don’t even know? Jesus tells us others should come first; can we do it?
