William G.
‘Bill’ Lowe
After a long bout with
cancer, former Selma resi-
dent Bill Lowe died July 6,
2004 in the arms of his
wife, Darlene, in Paradise,
Calif.
Mr. Lowe was born in
Monterey Park, Calif. and
grew up in Lomita. In
1955, he graduated from
Narbonne High School.
After graduation, Lowe
worked for Pacific Bell for
several years before join-
ing the city of Los Angeles
Fire Dept. in 1968. He re-
tired 30 years later. He
loved being a fireman, but
also enjoyed retirement.
In January 1968, Mr.
Lowe married his wife,
Darlene, in Las Vegas,
Nev. and lived in Southern
California during his time
in the fire service.
He and his wife left
California to retire in
Selma, Ore. in 1992. Liv-
ing there for eight years,
said his wife, they found
many loving and close
friendships that were and
are enjoyed and treasured
by them.
Mr. Lowe was a mem-
ber of the Grants Pass Elks
Lodge and, for a short
time, a member of the
Deer Creek Cemetery
Board. He and his wife
were proud to be members
of the Selma community,
said Mrs. Lowe.
Mr. Lowe is survived
by his wife, Darlene, of
Paradise, Calif.; three sons,
Tony Lowe, of New York,
N.Y., Barry Lowe, of Mis-
sion Viejo, Calif., and
Troy Lowe, of San Jose,
Calif.; and nine grandchil-
dren.
St. Patrick of the Forest
Catholic Church
As we celebrate the
17th Sunday in Ordinary
Time, we will hear Jesus
teaching his disciples how
to pray from Luke.
The Lord’s Prayer is
still recited by Christians.
The Gospel continues with
these words from Jesus:
“Ask and you will re-
ceive; seek and you will
find; knock and the door
will be opened to you.”
Prayer, talking to God
in supplication or thanks-
giving, is a powerful tool
to carry through life.

at 2 p.m. at the legion hall.
As I would not be a
slave, so I would not
be a master. This
expresses my idea of
democracy. Whatever
differs from this, to the
extent of the difference,
is no democracy.

Jean and James Nix
Nixes celebrate 50th wedding anniversary
James and Jean Nix, of
Kerby, were married 50
years as of July 20.
James was born in Ar-
kansas; Jean in Washing-
ton state. High school
sweethearts, they were
married July 20, 1954 in
Sequim, Wash.
James served 10 years
in the U.S. Air Force, and
the Nixes owned their own
business, traveling all over
the country by motor home
to adjust and repair shears,
slitters, and brakes at air
conditioning, sheet metal,
and roofing companies.
Now retired 10 years
from that occupation,
James still receives calls to
do the work.
Jean has done volun-
teer work for the Illinois
Valley Senior Center
Thrift Store, and now
works for the Seventh-day
Adventist Church Dorcas
food center in Cave Junc-
tion. She also enjoys read-
ing and crocheting.
James is a yard man,
and he enjoys working out-
side. He plays guitar in his
free time.
The Nixes have five
children; 13 grandchildren;
and
three
great-
grandchildren.
