On the 16th Sunday in
Ordinary Time, two of
three readings carry a
theme of service.
In Genesis, Abraham’s
wife and servants prepared
food and served it to three
visitors. In Luke’s Gospel,
Jesus enters a village and
is greeted by Martha, who
was burdened by much
serving and asked Jesus to
tell her sister, Mary, to
help her with the work.
In both, the service,
although important, was
not primary. Jesus also
said that he came not to be
served, but to serve.
