It has been said that politics is the second
oldest profession. I have learned that it bears
a striking resemblance to the first.
Train program strives to save lives
Being safe this sum-
mer means keeping your
eyes and ears open at rail-
road crossings and staying
off railroad tracks, said
Oregon Dept. of Transpor-
tation (ODOT).
Although it may look
easy to hike along a rail
line or cross a stream on a
railroad bridge, it is unsafe
and illegal, said ODOT.
A passenger train
struck and killed a Salem
woman on June 28. A tres-
passing incident along rail-
road tracks in Gervais on
June 3 also claimed a life.
“Trespassing is dan-
gerous,” said ODOT Rail
Division Administrator
Kell y
Ta ylo r.
“Locomotives are much
larger than cars and trucks,
and they hang over the
tracks by 3-feet on either
side. They create an optical
illusion that they are not
traveling as fast as they are
really going. Folks need to
stay far away from the
tracks.”
This is an especially
trying issue for railroad
engineers, conductors and
operations people. An inci-
dent traumatizes not only
victims and their families,
but also members of train
crews.
Federal law requires
an engineer to sound a lo-
comotive’s horn within a
quarter-mile of every
crossing. But, depending
on the length of the train
and speed, it can take more
than a mile to stop once
the brakes are applied.
Operation Lifesaver is
a national, non-profit
awareness program dedi-
cated to ending collisions,
- President Ronald Reagan -
fatalities and injuries at
highway/rail crossings and
on railroad rights of way.
When the program
started in Oregon in 1973,
there were 216 crossing
incidents. In 2003, there
were 27. For more infor-
mation about Operation
Lifesaver, contact Larry
Christianson at (503) 835-
0582.

If we ever forget that we
are one nation under
God, then we will be a
nation gone under.
Don’t be afraid to see
what you see.
It’s true hard work
never killed anybody,
but I figure why
take the chance.
Politics is just like show
business. You have a
hell of an opening, you
coast for a while, you
have a hell of a closing.
