contributed to the city and

ous to mention.

breaking the agreement
that was made.

From Russell Ehrman
Cave Junction
I’m just an ordinary
citizen who lives in Illinois
Valley. I’m no politician,
but I have a nose and I
smell something rotten.
I’m talking about the
forest service and its sal-
vage logging plan. I re-
member the Biscuit Fire. I
choked on smoke for
weeks. But the stink of the
forest service plan is
worse.
I could endure a few
weeks of smoke, and cheer
on the brave firefighters
who fought tirelessly to
control the fire.
But I cannot and will
not stomach an endless
parade - thousands of log
trucks - carrying our for-
ests out on their backs and
stealing our wilderness.
That wilderness is the very
reason I live here.
I know the forests have
managed for tens of thou-
sands of years without our
help. I know that what the
Bush Administration, um,
forest service, is proposing
has nothing to do with real
science, real forestry or
real facts. I know a politi-
cal agenda when I smell it,
and I for one am tired of
their lies.
When it comes down
to it, the old-growth forests
and roadless areas are criti-
cal to the quality of life
and future eco-tourism.
The wild and scenic
areas provide us with one
of the most beautiful
places to live and are the
homes of countless endan-
gered species, including
the wild salmon.
Leave it alone and let
it recover. This is not a
logging supermarket, open
to the highest bidder. It’s
my home.

On 15th Sunday in
Ordinary Time, we will
read the story of the Good
Samaritan from Luke,
which was an answer to a
law scholar’s question,
“And who is my
neighbor?”
Two people had
passed by a robbery victim
and offered no aid.
The Good Samaritan
stopped and cared for the
victim in a remarkable
way.
The scholar was di-
rected, “Go and do like-
wise.

Without doing anything,
things can sometimes
go more smoothly
just because of our
peaceful presence.
In a small boat when a
storm comes, if one
person remains solid
and calm, others will
not panic and the
boat is more likely to
stay afloat.
