TOYOTA PLUNDER - Apparently someone
with a master set of keys is stealing Toyota pickup
trucks in the 1981 to ‘86 category. At least four Toy-
ota pickups have been reported stolen in the area dur-
ing the past several days. They were taken from
Kerby, Cave Junction, and Selma. One, belonging to
Colene Talley, was taken at 12:30 in the afternoon
from the rear of her Bear Images Boutique. The
Kerby theft involved a pickup that was for sale,
owned by Cody and Christina Hill.
Indications are that the rigs will be found eventu-
ally stripped for parts. Although the vehicles are in-
sured, they, in most cases, are covered for liability
only. One of the victims has a suspect in mind, and
was going to do some checking.
MEET ‘N’ EAT - A general meeting will be held
at Selma Community & Education Center on Mon-

Saturday, July 17 at Doubletree Ranch in Merlin. The
play will feature local talent as Wild West characters

founded in 1864. For more information, contact Con-

Equipment, McGrews and Century 21 Harris & Tay-
lor… The Grants Pass Caveman at Sixth Street and
Morgan Avenue in Grants Pass incurred fire damage
late Sunday night, July 4. The 11-foot-tall fiberglass/
resin statue was blackened by the malicious ignition,
and its structural integrity compromised, said GP
Dept. of Public Safety.
LAST WORDS - I think that somehow, we learn
who we really are and then live with that decision.

Web quotes
From Lou Chauvin
Takilma
For consideration;
from the worldwide Inter-
net:
“The natural progress
of things is for liberty to
yield and government to
gain ground.” - Thomas
Jefferson.
“In all history there is
no war which was not
hatched by the govern-
ments, the governments
alone, independent of the
interests of the people, to
whom war is always perni-
cious even when success-
ful.” - Tolstoy.
“Governments have
never learned anything
from history, or acted on
principles deducted from
it.” - Hebbel (German poet
and playwright).
“The biggest lesson I
learned from Vietnam is
not to trust (our own) gov-
ernment statements. I had
no idea until then that you
could not rely on (them).”
- James Fullbright (U.S.
senator).
“In order to rally peo-
ple, governments need
enemies. They want us to
be afraid, to hate, so we
will rally behind them.
And if they do not have a
real enemy, they will in-
vent one in order to mobi-
lize us.” - Thich Nhat
Hanh (Vietnamese Bud-
dhist monk).
EIGHT DOLLAR ‘EAGLE’ - Led by Scoutmaster Pat Fahey, members of Grants Pass
American Legion Boy Scout Troop 23 work on Eight Dollar Road to install a pole
fence to keep vehicles off a swamp area as part of Shane Smith’s Eagle project.
Prop value
date slated
If property was dam-
aged or destroyed between
Jan. 1 and July 1, owners
can apply to the Josephine
County assessor to have
the real market and as-
sessed value determined as
of July 1.
Normally, property tax
is based on the value of the
property as it existed on
Jan. 1, the assessment date.
Application must be
made by Aug. 1 to apply
the July 1 valuation date.
However, if property
has been repaired, it may
not be in the owner’s best
interest to choose the July
1 assessment date, said the
assessor’s office.
Applications are avail-
able at the assessor’s office
in Grants Pass. For more
information phone (541)
474-5260.

City vs. CJ Lions
From Jean Mann
Grants Pass
I am writing in regard
to the problem that is go-
ing on between the city of
Cave Junction and Illinois
Valley Lions Club.
My husband was a
member of the Lions Club,
and in the early ‘60s, some
agreements were still being
made on a man’s word and
the shake of a hand.
The agreement on the
park between the city and
the Lions Club was a per-
petual lifetime agreement.
