Velva Jo Duncan
Velva Jo Duncan, 71,
of Selma, died Thursday,
July 1 at her home.
A celebration of her
life will be held at 11 a.m.,
Saturday, July 10 at I.V.
Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Duncan was born
Aug. 22, 1932 in Ada,
Okla. She moved to Illi-
nois Valley from Fairfield,
Calif. in 1989. She worked
as a fruit packer in Med-
ford, and enjoyed garden-
ing and fishing.
Mrs. Duncan is sur-
vived by her husband,
Billy Duncan, of Selma;
mother Velva Moore, of
Battleground, Wash.; three
sons, Dan Comer, of
Clovis, Calif., Dale Dun-
can and James Duncan, of
Santa Clara, Calif.; three
daughters, Ginger Mil-
bank, of Campbell, Calif.,
Mickey Barba, of Newark,
Calif., and Susan Lamb, of
Selma; three brothers,
Raphael Moore, of Kenai,
Alaska, Ronnie Moore, of
Santa Cruz and Donald
Moore, of Battleground;
eight grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
In the American West,
there were no master
and peons, partly
because on our
dangerous frontiers all
residents had to be
armed, and many people
carried their weapon
with them at all times.
The rifle, and later re-
volver, were great equal-
izers of men, and potent
encouragements to
civility and egalitarian-
ism in all
public dealings.

*Teen-agers sneaking
around on a property on
Westside Road at 7:26
p.m. were long gone when
a deputy arrived.
*A very tall truck
grazed a branch and left it
dangling, said a concerned
person in Selma.
*A man reported a
wallet containing only ID
and a pawn slip stolen
from a vehicle parked at
Shop Smart at 12:12 p.m.
*His bicycle was gone
when he went to retrieve it
from its hiding place in the
bushes on E. River Street
near Laurel Road, a man
said at 1:38 p.m.
*His former girlfriend,
who lives on the same
property, damaged his
trail, a man on S. Junction
Avenue said at 6:51 p.m.
She said he had damaged
some of her stuff, too. The
matter was resolved in a
civil compromise.
*An upset woman re-
ported having witnessed a
drug deal near a Selma
business at 7:39 p.m.
