Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, June 23, 2004 ‘Two-Shoes’ concludes long walk ‘Tony’ Betchik By PAM COOPER Special to ‘I.V. News’ “Charlie Two-Shoes,” also known as Anthony Francis Raphael Betchik, 53, wants his friends to know that he has traveled toward infinity and soft shoe-shuffled off this mor- tal coil on Memorial Day, May 31, 2004 at St. Fran- cis Extended Health Care in Bellingham , Wash. Cremation was han- dled by Jerns Funeral Chapel in Bellingham. A funeral service will be held at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction in August. The time and date will be announced. Mr. Betchik was born Feb. 2, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio to A.J. and Ollie Betchik. At 17 he left Cleveland, hitch-hiked to the West Coast, and ar- rived in Takilma in Illinois Valley in 1968. During the years he bucked hay, peeled poles, was a firefighter, and a forest service park ranger. He was a free-lance writer for the Grants Pass “Daily Courier,” and a disk jockey and copy writer for the former Illinois Valley commercial FM station, Radio KBIG. Mr. Betchik also worked as a re- porter/photographer, dark- room technician and layout aide for “Illinois Valley News.” It was his last job before his health began failing. A prolific poet and writer, he also was a singer, painter, and one “Dapper Dude.” During his illness he created one- of-a-kind watercolor cards. Plus, health permitting, he was primary day-care pro- vider and a wonderful grandfather for his grand- son. He entertained with wit and charm, and has indicated that he will be waiting on the other side with more songs and jokes, wearing his signature white suit and carrying his favorite cane. Mr. Betchik is sur- vived by his mother, Ollie Betchik, of Cleveland; a son, Dylan Betchik, of Bellingham; two brothers, John Betchik of Santa Fe, N.M., and Peter Betchik, of Cave Junction; two sis- ters, Mary Anne Finucan and Debbie Cotton, both of Cleveland; his ex-wife, Joyce, of Cave Junction; and their grandson, An- drew Betchik, of Belling- ham.
