Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, June 9, 2004 Page 15 For Evergreen/Madrona, it’s the principal of the thing, as Van Brunt, Brown switch Lise Van Brunt By SHANE WELSH Staff Writer While losing a loved one, Evergreen Elementary School will gain an old friend. Principal Lise Van Brunt will transfer to Mad- rona Elementary in Grants Pass this fall. Nancy Brown, Madrona Elemen- tary principal, who taught at Evergreen nine years ago, will trade places with Van Brunt. Van Brunt, who lives in Grants Pass, said the commute is taking valu- able family time. “Leaving my school here is very difficult,” she said tearfully. “The main reason I decided to make the switch is to be more involved in my son’s life. I want to do a good job at school, but spending nearly two hours a day on the road traveling isn't the best use of my time,” she said. Van Brunt said living outside a community can also make it hard for a principal to connect with the families and people who live there. “To live in the valley and be able to administer in your own community is a great thing,” she said. “There’s a better sense of ownership. Although Madrona is tucked be- tween Grants Pass and Murphy, it is more my community. It is important for a principal to be a part of their own community,” said Van Brunt. Even though the trans- fer will benefit Brown and Van Brunt, they still will miss the many students, staff, and their families they worked with during their time at the schools. “It’s been very emo- tional for both of us,” said Van Brunt. “Every time Nancy and I have talked about it, one of us cries; out of grief for losing our schools, but also out of anticipation of what we’re getting. “We both know we’re getting great schools, but we still will miss that sense of belonging and commit- ment. It’s really hard to walk away from a school,” Additional Listings Besides the program listings provided, the following also are among those available from Charter Communications. She is respected and appreciated by the staff. She also taught at Evergreen in the past. And many of the par- ents she taught have chil- dren in our classes now, which gives her a special connection with those stu- dents,” said Van Brunt. “I have been really blessed by this community. I have a lot of respect how it takes care of its own. The people here have risen to the occasion over and over again for me and this school,” she said. Van Brunt, who will administer at Evergreen until the end of summer, said she will do her best to keep contact with students after she leaves in August. “I always tell kids when I leave some place that if they write me, I will write back. I even have some kids that are adults now that still write me; I welcome that,” she said. Van Brunt also painted her hair purple for the day to honor a bet with her stu- dents after they raised $3,500 in April during Ev- ergreen’s Jog-A-Thon fund-raiser. The money helps fund student awards and field trips; a portion of which will go into a playground fund to purchase new equipment. * * * By SHANE WELSH Staff Writer Evergreen Elementary School will welcome a new principal for the 2004- 2005 school year. Nancy Brown, who has been principal of Mad- rona Elementary in Grants Pass for five years, will trade places with current Evergreen Principal Lise Van Brunt this fall. “Most people aren’t from out here and would prefer to be closer to where their own community is,” said Brown. “About the time I asked (Three Rivers School District superinten- dent) David Burgess, to consider me for the posi- tion of principal should it become available at Ever- green, Lise was looking to move back a little closer to her family,” she said. “I didn’t know that when I talked to him (Burgess). I think it was meant to be; it worked out really well for both of us.” In the past, Brown taught grades three to five at Evergreen Elementary for nearly 15 years before transferring to Madrona nearly nine years ago. “I have always loved Evergreen,” she said. “I worked there long enough that it became a part of me I had a lot invested in. I’ve missed being a part of a community where I can see what’s happening with the kids I know,” said Brown. Brown was born in Los Angeles, and gradu- ated high school in Chico, Calif. After spending a year in Holland during high school as a foreign exchange student, she de- cided to study foreign lan- guage and obtained a de- gree in German and a mi- nor in French. She went on to earn a secondary certificate for Nancy Brown teaching, which led her to earn a certificate for ele- mentary teaching. She later attended Portland State University and obtained her certificate for admini- stration. “I like working as an administrator,” she said, “because I have an oppor- tunity to work closer with individual students and parents. It all comes back to relating to the kids at school and working with their families; I just love that part of it,” she said. “Lise and I have been in close contact,” she said. “We’d like to make a seamless move. We’ve both attended site council meetings, PTAs, and talked to each other about individual kids and their needs because we don’t want those kids with spe- cial needs placed in the hands of just anybody. “My plan this next school year is to just step in. I think Lise has done an outstanding job here, and I have some big shoes to fill. “I will just get to re- know the school, and get to know the staff and kids better. I want to put 100 percent into doing what’s right for Evergreen,” she said.
