Free Search and Rescue Academy set
Anyone at least 14,
even without prior experi-
ence, can sign up for the
Josephine County Sheriff’s
Patrol Search & Rescue

“Citizens Academy.”
With room for 40 stu-
dents, the academy is
scheduled for two consecu-
tive weekends, beginning
June 5 and 6, concluding
June 12 and 13. The acad-
emy will be held at Rogue
Community College’s
Redwood Campus from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m.
The curriculum “will
provide a thorough intro-
duction to search and res-
cue, meeting the state’s
minimum training require-
ments.”
The SAR academy
will cover map and com-
pass, global positioning
systems, man-tracking,
wilderness survival, radio
communications, search
techniques, first aid/CPR,
cold-weather emergencies,
helicopter safety, crime-
scene preservation and a
variety of other subjects.
The academy is open
to all citizens and is of-
fered at no cost. Students
must be at least 14, with no
maximum age, and no
prior experience required.
Academy graduates
will qualify for member-
ship in the Josephine
County Search and Rescue
Reserves. Reservists are
activated for large-scale
searches, supplementing
active-duty SAR person-
nel. The reserve program is
a recent addition to the
Josephine County SAR
Unit. Current plans call for
a target reserve pool of 100
members, with estimates
of six to 10 activations
annually.
Academy graduates
wishing to be considered
including a K-9 search
team, a Swiftwater rescue
team, a dive rescue team,
and an urban SAR team,
trained for structural col-
lapse rescue. SAR also
sponsors a youth Search
and Rescue Explorers Post,
for those 14-20.
SAR is an all-
volunteer unit, funded en-
tirely through community
donations and grants. It is
the primary search agency
for the county, and actively
participates in a variety of
rescues and large-scale
emergencies, as well as
numerous community
events.

The application process
includes a background
check and an interview
process.
For those accepted,
there is a trial service pe-
riod, additional required
training, and minimum
attendance requirements.

members also receive
training on a variety of
snow craft, watercraft, and
several types of specialized
off-road vehicles. Ad-
vanced training is available
for qualified members wis-
ing to participate in rope
and wilderness rescue, in
conjunction with American
Medical Response’s Reach
and Treat (RAT) team.

cialty subunits of SAR;

support services to families
as they care for loved ones,
and present community
education programs for
health-care professionals
and the public. The Be-
reavement Program is
available to anyone in the
community despite the
type of death.”

program provides holistic
end-of-life care for people
and their families in Jose-
phine County, and parts of
Jackson and Douglas coun-
ties.
