Not-so-funny areas topics
for three-person comedy

offer worldly valley views

Four foreign exchange
students are providing an
international flavor at Illi-
nois Valley High School
this year.
Still mastering the
English language, but do-
ing just fine, are:
*Emily Wu, 18, a sen-
ior from Taiwan, who is
living with Sam and Diane
Steverson in Cave Junc-
tion. Steverson teaches at
Lorna Byrne Middle
School, and his wife is an
aide at IVHS.
*Tammy Kim, 17, a
senior who’s from South
Korea, and who also is
hosted by the Steversons.
*Christoph Kiahforst,
17, from Germany, a guest
of Gary Reeal in Cave
Junction. Kiahforst is in
the senior class.
*Ahron Yoon, 17, a
junior class student from
South Korea, who is
hosted by John and Linda
Swinson in CJ.
The four visitors each
said that they chose the
West Coast for factors in-
cluding its beauty, safety
and lack of blackouts.
“When I was choosing
where to go, the East Coast
had the terror attacks, and
the big blackout, so that’s
why I wanted to come to
the West Coast,” said Wu.
“The landscape is nice
here too,” she said, “and I
was surprised when I saw a
wild deer.”
“This area reminds me
of France,” said Kiahforst.
“I’ve been there, and both
places have a lot of moun-
tains.”
Besides being en-
tranced by the landscape
and wildlife, the students
also have been enjoying
new flavors for their taste
buds.
“I never had peanut
butter or jelly beans before
I came here,” noted
Kiahforst.

“Live theater can reach
people in ways that no
other medium can,” ac-
cording to Jane Lapiner,
artistic director and per-
former. “If you apply this
capacity for deeper com-
munication to human-
kind’s most important is-
sues and goals, leaven it
with broad, forgiving hu-
mor, the result can be life-
changing,” she said.
Another aspect of this
performance is that “it pro-
vides an unusual family
collaboration.” Simpson
and his partner, Lapiner,
have been working to-
gether on stage since they
acted as members of the
San Francisco Mime Troup
during the 1960s.
They are joined on
stage by their youngest
daughter, Joyful Simpson,
who has been dancing and
performing in the San
Francisco Bay Area for the
past two years. She has the
central role of “Raven.”
Everything is seen through
the perspective of
“Raven,” who observes
and interacts with people
on her path to help restore
balance to the world.
“What’s Funny About
Climate Change,” a three-
person comedy review on
melting icecaps, rising sea
levels and record high tem-
peratures, will be per-
formed at 7:30 p.m. on
Monday, May 24, in the
Lorna Byrne Middle
School theater.
The show is a produc-
tion of Petrolia’s Human
Nature theater company.
Human Nature has toured
the United States and
Europe with musical com-
edy shows about pressing
social and environmental
issues. It first came to pub-
lic attention in the early
1990s, when its musical
comedy, “Queen Salmon,”
traveled in the Pacific
Northwest.
“What’s funny about
global warming is not the
changes our planet is un-
dergoing, but the way in
which people attempt to
deny it, hide it, exploit it,
or explain it away,” said
David Simpson, one of the
show’s writers and a
founding member of Hu-
man Nature.
