Illinois Valley Little League opening day ceremony
Jubilee Park in Cave Junction was the site for the annual opening day ceremony for
I.V. Little League on Saturday, May 1. Thirteen teams of various-age players were
introduced, with each player given recognition. Sonny Moore, District 8 Volunteer of
the Year and an umpire, was master-of-ceremonies. In left photo, Janice Somers is
honored as I.V. Little League Volunteer of the Year for 2003 because of her hard
work and positive attitude. With her are Justin and Sean Norvell, chosen Sportsmen
of the Year. The twins are on a junior team for teen-agers. Teams are sponsored by
Home Valley Bank, Pizza Pit, The Open Door, Taylor’s Sausage, Gatt Electric, Shop
Smart Food Warehouse, Cave Junction Family Medicine, Lazy B E Cattle Co., Radio
Shack/CJ Video Mart, Carlos Restaurante, Z Coffee, Oregon Caves Chevron, and
Kerby Masonic Belt Lodge 18. The season is under way with many games set.
QUILT HELP NEEDED - A project to supply 35 quilts for beds in the soon-to-be-
built Illinois Valley Safe House has been undertaken by women of the Relief Soci-
ety in the Cave Junction Ward of the LDS Church. There will be a community quilt-
ing bee on Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the LDS Church, 209 S. Junc-
tion Ave. in Cave Junction, to work on five full quilts still needed. All levels of abil-
ity will be appreciated. The Safe House will provide shelter to homeless and
abused women and children in the valley. For more information phone Linda Har-
