The driver (above right) told an Oregon State Police trooper that something in the front end of his pickup truck locked, causing the vehicle to veer into the lane for southbound traffic, strike an embankment ‘Charlie’ Caughel A graveside service for Cave Junction resident Charles “Charlie” Gardner Caughel, 77, who died at home on Friday, April 2, 2004, will be held on Tuesday, May 4. The service at Eagle Point National Cemetery will begin at 1 p.m. Chap- lain Sandi Richard will officiate. Mr. Caughel was born on March 15, 1927 in Lackawanna, N.Y. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and Merchant Marines. On May 20, 1976 in San Pedro, Calif. he mar- ried the former Elsie Ann Thorak, who survived him until dying on April 21. Mr. Caughel and his wife moved to Cave Junc- tion in 1982. He served as caretaker at Illinois Valley Airport for 18 years. He was looking forward to retirement when a sudden illness forced him to be discharged from his duties in 2000. He enjoyed music, photography, reading and fishing. Surviving are his sis- ter, Bea Pietrick; a step- daughter, Valerie Edmonds of Selma; two step-sons, Robert Thorak and Steven Thorak, both of O’Brien; and a step-grandson. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors handled arrange- ments. Elsie Ann Caughel Elsie Ann Caughel, 70, of Cave Junction, died at her daughter’s home in Selma on Wednesday, April 21, 2004. Visitation will be on Monday, May 3 from noon to 8 p.m. at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors chapel in Grants Pass. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 at Cougar Kim Hamilton pitched a two-hitter and a perfect game to lead Illi- nois Valley to 12-1 and 10- 0 victories against Hidden Valley on Saturday, April 24 in Murphy. The win put Illinois Eagle Point National Cemetery with Chaplain Sandi Richard officiating. Mrs. Caughel was born on Sept. 24, 1933 in Ave- nal, N.J. She graduated from high school in Los Angeles. She married Charles Caughel, who died 19 days before her, on May 20, 1976 in San Pedro, Calif. She enjoyed music, gardening and sewing. She is survived by her daughter, Selma resident Valerie Edmonds; two sons, Robert Thorak and Steven Thorak, both of O’Brien; two brothers, Joe Bakos and Frank Bakos, of New Jersey; a sister, Rose Evans of Washington state; and three grandchildren. Arrangements are be- ing handled by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. Richard L. Bowers A “Celebration of Life” for Selma resident Richard Leeton Bowers, 74, who died April 21, 2004, will be held at his home on Sunday, May 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. The son of Richard L. Bowers Sr. and Nora Bow- e r s Smith, he was born on June 8, 1929 in Mem- p h i s , Tenn., the old- est of eight children. He graduated high school in Colfax, Iowa in 1947. He married Virginia (Shepley) on Dec. 24, 1949 in Col- fax. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in 2003. He worked at the May- tag Co. in Newton, Iowa, becoming a certified tool and die maker by complet- ing its four-year program. In 1971, he formed a partner- ship with Ed Harken and started a successful busi- ness, BlackHawk Engi- neering Co. Inc., Tool & Die Engineering, Design and Manufacture. He sold his share to his partner and retired in 1979 at age 49. Mr. Bowers and his family then moved to Cali- fornia, where they re- mained until 1996, when they moved to Selma. He spent his days golf- ing, working in his shop, and walking his acreage with his dogs. He enjoyed many activities, including spending time with family and friends, camping, hunting, ocean fishing, trapshooting, and using his skills as a mechanic to re- store classic cars and an ocean fishing boat. He always enjoyed problem-solving and was the person many would turn to for advice. He loved a good joke, could tell a great story and was a great Kibitzer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia; four children, Angi, Gina, Rich and Jill; his mother, Nora Smith; four sisters; two brothers; six grand- children; and one great- grandchild. Rosa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. His hobby was wood-working. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Myers, of Cave Junction; his father, James Myers, of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; his mother, Virginia Myers of Elmira, Ore.; three sons, Glen Reese, of La Grande, Ore., James Myers Jr., and Timothy Myers, both of Cave Junction; four broth- ers, Gary Myers, of El- mira, Brett and Troy Myers, both of Myrtle Creek, and Todd Myers, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; two sisters, Patty Goldman, of Los Angeles, and Tonya White, of Eugene; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Myers Sr. Cave Junction resident James Richard Myers Sr., 57, died Monday, April 19 at his home. Arrangements were by Illinois Valley Funeral Home. A graveside service was held Friday, April 23 at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Mr. Myers was born May 20, 1946 in Santa Rosa, Calif. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He moved to Illinois Valley 35 years ago from Santa * * * In Cave Junction on Thursday, the Cougars track team captured the boys and girls team titles in a four-way meet.
