Weekend hikes planned

Jordan Anderson, son of
Steve Anderson of Cave
Junction and Jill Christo-
pher of Bakersfield, Calif.,
has returned to Iraq after
two weeks of “R&R.”
Anderson, a fire sup-
port specialist with the 3rd
Infantry Regiment of the
Army’s 3rd Brigade, 2nd
Battalion, has been in-
volved with school, hospi-
tal, and police station re-
building projects. He also
helped train Iraqi military,
police and border patrols.
His team encountered
minor combat situations,
coming under mortar fire.
“Each time it happens,
we just throw on our gear
and lie low,” he said.
“Then we run around to
check on our buddies.”
Anderson said that
while he believes the U.S.
deployment in Iraq is “a
very good thing,” which is
“definitely improving the
quality of life” in Iraq, he
understands that the Iraqis
“are a very proud people.
They don’t want us to stay
much longer.”
His stint in the service
overseas has given him a
different perspective on
life, he said.
“I realize that you defi-
nitely need to take those
chances in life as opportu-
nities arise,” he said. “We
take a lot of things for
granted here.”
Anderson has 17
months yet to serve in his
enlistment.
He plans to study
criminal forensics after
leaving the service.
On Saturday, April 17,
the Deer Creek Associa-
tion and the Siskiyou Pro-
ject are co-sponsoring a
moderate hike on the Lone
Pine Prospect Trail in
Selma.
This 2-mile hike will
go through the proposed
Anderson West timber sale
and 300 acres of forest
leading to the Lone Pine
Prospect mine.
Participants should
meet at Selma Select Mar-
ket at 10 a.m.

Sheriff’s Office is asking
for any information about
an O’Brien woman who
has been missing since
Friday, April 9.
Mary Rose Laforge,
46, was last seen walking
from the O’Brien Country
Store toward her residence
on Lone Mountain Road.
Laforge is described as
an American Indian, 5-6,
160 pounds, with black
shoulder-length hair and
brown eyes. She was last
seen wearing a dark-
colored, hooded jacket
with faux-fur trim. She is
partially paralyzed on her
right side due to a stroke.
Greg Walter will lead a
moderate to difficult hike
to a waterfall along Snail-
back Creek, a tributary into
the scenic section of Illi-
nois River.
Hikers will explore an
area within the perimeter
of the Biscuit Fire and will
have an opportunity to ex-
plore the effects of the fire,
as well as the history of the
area.
Hikers should bring
water, lunch and snacks
and meet at Selma Select
Market at 10 a.m.
