Travis Robbins, coach for
the Boys & Girls Club
(Illinois Valley Unit), has
been chosen by his peers
as Coach of the Year.
Robbins, a coach for
five years was nominated
for his dedication and in-
fluence on those he helps.
He was one of 15 winners
selected from among hun-
dreds of entries.
He is involved with
Illinois Valley Little
League and plans to be-
come involved in the val-
ley’s Boys & Girls Club
football program next fall.

Saturday, April 3 set things
up nicely for Illinois Val-
ley High School’s Cougar
softball team heading into
its conference home
opener with North Valley
on Tuesday, April 6.
The Cougars’ wins at
Mazama were studies in
contrast. The opener, a 4-2
decision, featured pitching
and defense. In the night-
cap, I.V. pounded the Vi-
kings 14-11.
Kim Hamilton limited
Mazama to 2 runs, both
unearned, on two hits in
the first game. She struck
out eight while walking
none. She retired the side
in order in four of her
seven innings pitched.
The Vikings struck
first, scoring their pair of
runs on a single, a stolen
base and a costly error in
the bottom of the third.
The Cougars got right
back in at the top of the
fourth. Erika Riley led off
with a single; Meghan
Jackson sacrificed her
over; and Riley moved to
third on Tiffannee Grif-

I.V. took the lead in
the fifth on back-to-back
doubles by Hamilton and
Jessica Ragsdale. I.V.
added an insurance run in
the top of the seventh on
Riley’s third hit of the
game, a stolen base and
Catherine Sullivan’s single
to right.
In game two, Illinois
Valley jumped out front
early. Ricci Coultas led
off, reaching base on an
error. Kelsi Snook, moved
into the number two posi-
tion in the batting order to
take advantage of her bun-
ting ability, sacrificed
Coultas to second, and she
scored on a Ragsdale sin-
gle. Four pitches later, Ri-
ley knocked in Ragsdale.
The Vikings knotted it
up in the third on a pair of
singles and a two-base er-
ror. After a scoreless third
inning the Cougars struck
for 2 more in the fourth
when Ragsdale, Riley and
Jackson fashioned three
straight singles.
I.V. added 5 runs in
the fifth, 3 in the sixth and
2 in the seventh. Mazama
scored twice in the fifth
and sixth, leaving them
down 14-6 heading into
the final half-inning.
On the day, Riley was
7-for-7, including a pair of
doubles, 4 runs scored and
four runs batted in. She
walked once and had an
RBI sacrifice fly.
Hamilton, besides her
pitching duties, was 4-for-
7 at the plate, with three
doubles, 4 runs scored and
a pair of runs batted in.
In the second game
Ragsdale went 3-for-4
with an RBI and 4 runs
scored, and freshman
Miller was 2-for-4 with a
double and a pair of RBIs.
First-year head coach
Justine Johnson called the
sweep “a real good start
for us. We still have a way
to go, but the girls are
working hard every day;
getting better every day
and intend to contend.”
The Cougs will host
Phoenix on Saturday, April
10 for a doubleheader at
1:30 p.m. at the IVHS
field. Admission is free.

As Coach of the Year,
Robbins received $500 for
his valley organization,
and he has been entered to
win an additional $2,000
for the club. He was pre-
sented the $500 check dur-
ing the Trailblazer home
game half-time on Satur-
day, April 3.
Robbins was congratu-
lated on behalf of the Blaz-
ers, Northwest Food Stores
and the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Rogue Valley.
