HAM JAM - A class for obtaining a ham radio
operator’s license will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 7 in CJ City Hall. Classes will be held Wednes-
days and Fridays through April with testing set for
May 5. There is a fee. For information, contact Jim

PLASMA PROJECT - American Red Cross will
hold a blood drive at Illinois Valley Senior Center,
520 E. River St., on Thursday, April 8 from 1 to 6

CLAY RATTLE SKIT - Performances of a
myth, created by participants of the Clay Rattle Pro-
ject, will be presented during the season-opening Art
Walk in Downtown CJ on Friday, April 9 at 6:30 and
7:30 p.m. at Cone 10 Studios, 360 Caves Hwy.
ARTISAN GATHERING - The Southern Ore-
gon Guild, a nonprofit artisan education group, is
sponsoring a public workshop on marketing strategies
on Saturday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the
county building in CJ. There is a fee. Phone Tom Tur-

SPRING MARKET - Booths rentals are avail-
able for the Illinois Valley Family Coalition (IVFC)
Spring Market on Saturday, May 1 at 535 E. River St.
in Cave Junction. The market will run from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. and feature handmade crafts, plants, fine art
and live music. Funds will directly support IVSC ser-

ROGUE FLOAT - Reservations to float the wild
section of the Rogue River between Grave Creek and
Foster Bar are being given away via telephone. Phone

OFF-ROAD TOADS - A solutions-oriented field
trip to examine off-road damage at the Eight Dollar
and Day’s Gulch areas will be held on Wednesday,
April 14. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the I.V.
Ranger District office, and bring water and lunch, as
the outing will run until noon. Some space might be
available in one forest service vehicle.
ART IN ’05 - Rogue Community College is seek-
ing entries for the 2005 exhibit season. Artists at least
18 can sign up. There is a processing fee. The dead-
line for submission is Saturday, May 1. Phone Tommi

WOODCOCK ‘WALK’ - Naturalist Greg Ben-
nett will lead a Siskiyou Project-sponsored hike past
the Woodcock Fen up to Woodcock Mountain on Sat-
urday, April 10. Participants should bring plenty of
water, lunch, and hiking shoes. Hikers should meet at
Coffee Heaven at 10 a.m.
NOTEPAD - Rogue Community College presi-
dential candidates are being interviewed by the RCC
Board of Education, which will announce its choice of
a new president on April 20...The Oregon Fire Mar-
shals Association reminds those who live in wildfire
areas to do some spring cleaning outdoors to protect
their homes this summer...Lovejoy Hospice received
a $5,000 grant from the Ford Family Foundation to
help complete a Field Staff Technology Project which
will provide nurses and social workers the use of lap-
top computers while working with patients.

with the Lions Club motto,
“We Serve,” desiring to
withdraw from association
with anyone they don’t
feel supports this motto.
Being one of the coun-
cilmen responsible for the
decision to implement the
use fees they are con-
cerned about, I feel the
need to explain my reason-
ing behind the decision.
My feeling is that
since the park maintenance
was paid for by the taxpay-
ers in the city limits, and
many events benefit the
whole valley, it would be
inappropriate to use my
position on the council to
decide which charity tax-
payer money should go to.
I did vote in favor of a
fee that would represent
actual cost to the city of
making the park available.
I am disappointed that both
letters have made it appear
the city is making a profit
from these fees, as it is not.
I sincerely regret the
accusations against the
morals and ethics of those
who donate their time to
serve on the city council.
Though both Lions Clubs
in the valley have made
these accusations, I will
not let that deter me from
continuing to support my
community.
I have made out a
check for $150 payable to
the city of Cave Junction
to cover the cost of the CJ
Lions use of the park for
its event. A representative
of the club is welcome to
pick it up at Crossroads
Animal Hospital if they
simply agree to have a sin-
cere discussion at their
next meeting regarding
their motto and code of
ethics, particularly the sec-
tion which states, “To be
careful with my criticism
and liberal with my praise;
to build up and not de-
stroy... To encourage ser-
vice-minded people to
serve their community
without personal financial
reward...”
Although these accusa-
tions will not make me
stop volunteering my time
on the city council, they
certainly do not encourage
me to do so. I ask that they
determine if these accusa-
tions are in keeping with
their own code of ethics. If
not, perhaps they can con-
sider ways they can better
keep these ethics.
I am not asking the
Lions to agree with me on
every issue, but simply to
agree to disagree at times
without continuing accusa-
tions of animosity and un-
willingness to serve. I hope
they accept my offer.

Man found
24 hours
after crash
More than 24 hours
after his pickup truck
veered off Redwood Hwy.

ings man was found on the
side of the road near Illi-
nois Valley, covered with
blood and mud.
Jared Lee Johansen,
22, suffered a laceration on
his head when the 2000
Nissan Frontier he was
driving careened off the
road into a ravine on the
north side of the highway
near the top of Hay’s Hill
Friday morning, April 2.
Johansen apparently
crawled some 40 feet from
where his vehicle ended up
in the ravine. A passerby
noticed him around 2 p.m.
Saturday lying alongside
the road, according to the
Josephine County Sheriff’s
Office.
Johansen was released
from Three Rivers Com-
munity Hospital in Grants
Pass on Sunday, April 4.
According to Illinois
Valley Fire Dept. (IVFD),
Johansen’s northbound
vehicle crossed all four
traffic lanes, became air-
borne and clipped a tree.
There were no skid marks,
which suggests that
Johansen fell asleep at the
wheel.
IVFD, sheriff’s depu-
ties, and American Medi-
cal Response responded to
the scene.
