Llama packing clinic deadline Saturday, April 10

Crystal Springs Llamas in
Placerville, Calif., to pre-
sent a full day of llama-
packing instruction at their
llama ranch on Saturday,
April 17.

The clinic will be lim-
ited to a small group to
allow for “hands-on” par-
ticipation in learning to
handle llamas on a pack
trip and to easily and cor-
rectly train a llama to pack.

seminar can learn enough
about llama-packing to get
started immediately, said
the Abrams.

pack llama; what to expect
of a well-trained animal;
and how to improve skills
if a person has already
been packing.
The clinic will be tai-
lored to the needs of indi-
viduals in the group, and a
variety of equipment for
basic to “deluxe” trekking
will be displayed.
Llamas are easily man-
aged and pleasurable trail
companions, and they have
minimal effect on the envi-
ronment, said the Abrams.
Llamas are browsers, and,
unlike most other pack
stock, people don’t need to
carry food for them, just a
small amount of supple-
ment.
Stauffer has 21 years
experience breeding, train-
mountains of the North-
west.
He has conducted nu-
merous packing seminars
for Gold Country Llama
Association, the Pacific
Crest Trail Association and
other groups of individu-
als, from beginners to ex-
perienced llama-packers.
He has also provided the
U.S. Forest Service with
llamas for annual trail
maintenance.
There will be a fee for
the llama-packing clinic.
Price includes lunch, the
booklet, “Llama Packing
With Rudy,” a copy of Mt.
Lehman
Llama’s
“Poisonous Plant” booklet,
and information to help
people get started or en-
hance their current packing
knowledge.
There will also be a
day hike with Stauffer,
weather permitting, on
Sunday, April 8 for experi-
ence in handling llamas on
the trail. There will be a
fee, which includes lunch.
