Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, February 25, 2004 LBMS pupils figure well in math event Lorna Byrne Vikings proved sharp at area about this particular achievement is that al- Doug Hoskins, Brendan Fiorini, Michelle La Pierre mathematics competitions. Illinois Valley students applied the skills they learned in their math classes while taking the American Math Competi- tion test along with other Josephine County schools. At the end of the exam, Lorna Byrne Middle School students ranked number one in the county. Of the top 10 individual scores, Vikings team mem- ber Doug Hoskins ranked first, Brendan Fiorini sec- ond, Michelle La Pierre third, and Arthur Weinkauf fourth. Teacher Helga Dudley, said, “They have been studying hard in class and they have been excited about math. “What is remarkable St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church On the First Sunday of Lent, the reading from Luke’s Gospel describes how Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting. At the end of the 40 days, the devil made tempting promises of power, glory and king- doms if Jesus would bow down and worship him. But Jesus replied firmly, “You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.” We too are tempted by the devil, but armed with the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Transfiguration. What does it mean? For Jesus it meant being changed by God his father to focus on the last days of his life, when his true spirit and purpose on Earth would be revealed. We, too, can be trans- figured from our sinful selves to Christian believ- ers who can stand against evil, and in so doing reflect the power of God. Usually the larger the number of participants, the lower the overall average school score. But that cer- tainly wasn’t true of this group of students.” After excelling in the competition, Lorna Byrne students went on to form a Mathcounts Team, match- ing skills with school dis- tricts from Roseburg to Ashland on Feb. 7 at North Medford High School. The competition, de- signed by engineers, busi- ness owners, and educa- tors, entailed individual efforts on difficult multi- step problems and pre- cluded use of calculators. Led by captain Wil- liam Crowl, the Lorna Byrne team of Mideon Hoffman, Doug Hoskins, Jacob Michael, William Maher, and Cedar Cosner received a trophy for fourth place competing with larger schools like Ashland, Hedrick, and McLaughlin. An observer com- mented that it was unusual for a first-time competitor to place in this nationally recognized activity. Page 11 Safety tips on best way to store flammables Always store flamma- ble substances in cool, well-ventilated places, away from furnaces, heat- ers, ranges, clothes dryers, power tools or sources of heat, including sunlight. Use only airtight con- tainers designed for storing flammables. Glass contain- ers break easily, and non- approved plastic containers might be eaten away by flammable substances. Store flammab les away from living areas and out of children’s reach. Keep substances in their original containers with the labels intact. Re- place torn or missing la- bels, and identify the type of substance and its flam- mability rating.
