Page 4 Luther E. Tibbs Cave Junction resident Luther Eugene Tibbs, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 at his home. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Selma Baptist Church, with the Rev. Monty Pope officiating. Burial followed at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Arrangements were made through Illinois Val- ley Funeral Home. Mr. Tibbs was born Oct. 22, 1929 in Lookeba, Okla. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart for inju- ries sustained while serv- ing in the Korean War. He moved to Illinois Valley in 1947, coming from California. After working for the National Park Service at Oregon Caves National Monument for a time, he became a building contractor and built many homes in the Cave Junction area before retiring in 1980. He was a member of Selma Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Tibbs, of Cave Junction, whom he married on Jan. 23, 1955; three sons, Neal Tibbs of Grants Pass, Dan Tibbs of R a n c h o C u c a m u n ga , Calif., and Jerry Tibbs of Cave Junction; two broth- ers, Harvie Tibbs of Ely, Nev., and Rudy Tibbs of Camas, Wash.; four sisters, Eunice Truly of San Jose, Calif., Margie Current of Nampa, Idaho, Betty Chorey of Umatilla, Ore., and Ruth Mathews, of Umatilla, Ore.; five grand- children; and many nieces and nephews. Sarah A. Powell Former Illinois Valley resident Sarah A. Powell, 41, died in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 3, 2004. She was born in Spo- kane on Jan. 21, 1963 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School with honors. She attended Pomona College, the Uni- versity of Washington and the Sorbonne. Ms. Powell became interested in wine while at the Lycee Agricole de Macon-Davaye in France. She returned to the United States to study at Univer- sity of California, Davis, where she received a de- gree in fermentation sci- ence in 1988. She worked in the wine industry in South Af- rica, Australia, and New Zealand, and as assistant winemaker for The Hogue Cellars in Prosser, Wash. In 1991 she became the winemaker for Foris Vineyards Winery in Cave Junction, where she re- mained for 10 years, win- ning many honors and awards. She created Vi- gneron Consulting to pro- mote the best viticulture practices with grape grow- ers. In 2002, Ms. Powell became co-owner and winemaker for a new busi- ness, Roxy Ann Winery, Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, February 18, 2004 built in the historic Hill- crest Orchard in Medford. In 2003, she commenced marketing her own pre- mium brand under the la- bel Sarah Powell Wines, until she was struck down with cancer in the prime of her life. Ms. Powell greatly enjoyed kayaking on the Rogue and Illinois rivers, and climbing and telemark skiing in her beloved Siskiyou Mountains. She promoted wise use of natu- ral resources and supported ecological awareness. Ms. Powell is survived by her father, William J. Powell, and step-mother, Leona Dater of Spokane; a sister, Amy Erixon of Evanston, Ill.; two broth- ers, David Powell of Seat- tle, and Daniel Powell of Spokane.
