LDS site sheds light on
family history searches
By SHANE WELSH
The Cave Junction
Ward of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints has expanded re-
sources at its Family His-
tory Center to include An-
cestry.com.
The Family History
Center, co-directed by vol-
unteers Elaine Rigby and
Valerie Brown, is a geneal-
ogy research facility on
Junction Avenue that has
been open at the CJ loca-
tion for nearly five years.
The center was de-
signed to unite and encour-
age families to learn about
their history and develop a
family tree of ancestral
events.
Volunteer staff mem-
bers can assist with start-
ing, collecting and orga-
nizing family research
such as dates and places of
birth, christenings, and
marriages. There is no
charge, and no attempts at
conversions.
The center is open
Tuesdays and Wednesday
from 4 to 7 p.m.; and
Thursdays from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m., and 3 to 6 p.m.
Staff can also assist in
searching many of the na-
tional databases, to which
they have access, which
contain millions of names
linked to family pedigrees.
With the addition of
Ancestry.com, people can
use the center’s computers
to find family information
worldwide.
Special website and
computer equipment
available to anyone
at no charge.
more than five million
pages containing historical
newspaper articles.
Although the website
charges for access, dues
have been paid by the
church, allowing free ac-
cess to all who use the ser-
vice at the center.
To assist researchers, a
variety of genealogical
website links and historical
books and magazines are
available at the center.
Church microfilm and mi-
crofish machines can also
be used to review and print
extensive records on film.
With all of the re-
sources the center has to
offer, researchers should
have little trouble finding
even the oldest of their
ancestors.

Man arrested
in reported
Jan. 1 rape
Early on Jan. 1, a teen-
age girl contacted police to
report that she’d been
sexually assaulted.
The 17-year-old was
met by American Medical
Response (AMR) Ambu-
lance as she walked down
Williams Hwy. She was
taken to Three Rivers
Community Hospital.
The girl reported she
was sexually assaulted
while staying overnight at
a friend’s house on Wil-
liams Hwy. The Oregon
State Police, assisted by
the Josephine County
Sheriff’s Office, inter-
viewed the victim, and
people in the house at the
time of the incident. The
OSP Crime Lab assisted in
the investigation and col-
lection of evidence.
On Sunday, Jan. 18,
John Reese Hays Jr, 33,
was arrested and charged
with first-degree rape, and
first-degree sodomy.
