CONCERNED CITIZENS - I.V. Concerned
Citizens For a Better Community will hold a follow-
up meeting concerning illegal and illicit drug activity
in Illinois Valley at the Illinois Valley Family Coali-
tion Bldg. on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The
meeting will address various helpful actions valley
residents can take to support valley youth and help
reduce drug activity. Anyone can attend. For more

KING HOLIDAY - Monday, Jan. 19 will mark
another observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Banks, schools, and city, county, state and federal of-
fices, including post offices, will be closed.
HARLEY HAPPENING - Tickets for the I.V.
Lions Labor Day Harley Raffle are available. The
“hawg” that will be raffled this year is a 2004 FX
DWG Dyna Wide Glide. Tickets are available at Har-

FOREST RESOURCES - Oregon Forest Re-
sources retired forester, Jim Rombach, will be the
guest speaker during the Grants Pass and Josephine
County Chamber of Commerce general membership
luncheon meeting on Friday, Jan. 23 at noon at J.J.
North’s Grand Buffet in Grants Pass. Rombach will
discuss recent forest fires and how they are affecting
Oregon. Anyone can attend. For more information,

NEW STOP - The city of Cave Junction is noti-
fying residents that it will install two additional stop
signs at the intersection of W. Lister Street and Kerby
Avenue creating a four-way stop. This installation is
scheduled to be completed by mid-January.
CHILDREN’S HEARTS - The Illinois Valley
Branch Library invites children to make valentines to
decorate the library. “Love Your Library” will end on
Feb. 12. Valentines may be made by individual chil-
dren or an entire family or class working together.
Prizes are donated by The Illinois Valley Friends of
the Library.
MEDICARE WHEELCHAIRS - All Medicare
recipients should now be aware that if they suffer
from a number of conditions, they may be eligible to
receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare,
according to Angels Have Wheels. Conditions include
arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disor-
ders, and difficulty walking or propelling a standard
wheelchair. For more information on Medicare eligi-

SCHC WORKSHOP - The first in a planned se-
ries of public workshops regarding proposed develop-
ment of Siskiyou Community Health Center (SCHC)
will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The CJ City Council
and SCHC directors will meet at 6 p.m. in city hall.
BASKETBALL HOOPLA - IVHS boys basket-
ball team is having a fund-raising raffle. Prizes in-
clude a Sony 51-inch high-definition wide-screen TV;
a Dell desktop computer; and a one-night stay and
Sunday brunch for two at the Camas Room at Seven
Feathers Resort. The drawing will be held at half-time
of the last IVHS home game on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
You need not be present to win. Tickets are available
at all Home Valley Bank branches, Shop Smart Food
Warehouse (Customer Service Center), Taylor’s Sau-
sage Country Store, Selma Video, and Pizza Pit.

Never cut what you can untie
A storm has brewed between the city of Cave Junction
and the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, which is unfor-
tunate, to use the word underscored by Sheriff Dave Daniel
during the city council meeting on Monday night, Jan. 12.
Daniel used the word in reference to comments by
Mayor Ed Faircloth in a page 3 story in the Dec. 10 issue.
Unfortunately, the sheriff’s tone seemed to some that he
was blaming “Illinois Valley News” for the comments
made by the mayor.
On Monday night, Daniel told the council that no
deputies want to serve as the city contract officer, appar-
ently because of the mayor’s criticisms about coverage and
the city getting its money’s worth. It seems to us that the
sheriff, as the person in charge, simply needs to exercise
his authority and assign a deputy.
Also, if there are problems between the city and the
sheriff’s office, it would seem better to address them im-
mediately, rather than waiting a month. The council has
made clear its desire to have better dialogue, and has indi-
cated that there is frequently no response to its pointing out
identified problem areas to the sheriff’s office.
It sounds like the age-old communication problem,
possibly between the mayor and sheriff.
It would behoove the city and sheriff’s office to rem-
edy that situation. The citizenry deserves nothing less.

American Legion
During the meeting of
American Legion Auxil-
iary Unit 70 on Jan. 7, it
was voted to donate shoes
to Lorna Byrne Middle
School as there is quite a
need for the children there.
The Junior girls were
invited to a lunch in Med-
ford to honor women vet-
erans on Feb. 14. They are
excited about it.
Fund-raisers were dis-
cussed for the Juniors to
raise money for their pro-
jects. We will be making
vests for them as we need
more.

Waldo Mining District
The Waldo Mining
District will hold its first
public meeting of 2004 on
Wednesday, Jan. 28 begin-
ning at 7 p.m. at the Jose-
phine County Bldg. in
Downtown Cave Junction.
Items on the agenda
include: The Siskiyou re-
gional Education Project’s
suit against the Siskiyou
National Forest (SNF)
“designed to severely limit
or prohibit all mining ac-
tivities in or near water
including for gold panning,
sluicing, and especially
suction dredging.”
The district’s counter-
suit against SNF is de-
signed to allow mining as
allowed under the current
laws and regulations, and
the district’s suit against
the secretary of commerce
to remove several species
of local salmon from the
threatened and endangered
species list.
The current rising
price of gold, and what
that means for miners and
claim owners, along with
other mining issues, also
will be discussed.

varsity basketball team beat Lakeview 74-65 in Ken
Mann Memorial Gym on Friday night, Jan. 9. For the
Cougars, Mike Bertsch and Jon Riley teamed for 44
points. Illinois Valley is 1-2 in the Skyline Conference.
