Page 6 Jerry Acklen Diabetes Health Association The Cave Junction branch of the Jerry Acklen Diabetes Health Associa- tion will meet on Thurs- day, Jan. 8 at Illinois Val- ley Senior Center, 520 E. River St. in Cave Junction at 1:30 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 70 During the Dec. 3 meeting of American Le- gion Auxiliary Unit 70, Junior pins were awarded Tanya Carey, Kristin Col- bert, Tiffany Garland, and Katrina Grove. Seven pairs of slippers made by two unit members were sent to The Dalles Veterans Home. The unit also donated 60 pairs of shoes to Illinois Valley High School for children who might need them. On Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, the color guard participated in the flag- raising, and toddler Re- becca Colbert laid a wreath at the memorial at Cave Junction City Hall. Senior members deco- rated the post for the Dec. 20 Christmas party for post and auxiliary members. Junior girls filled Christmas bags with cook- ies, candy and personal hygiene items for veterans at the White City Domi- ciliary. The bags were de- livered personally to each vet at the Dom on Dec. 22 by six Junior members. The Juniors and three Sen- ior members sang Christ- mas carols throughout the Dom, and many veterans joined in. The group received much applause from the veterans, as they were so happy to have the auxiliary there. Lunch was provided at the Dom. It was a re- warding experience for everyone who attended. Garden study by Extension starts Jan. 8 Josephine County resi- dents are reminded that there is still space and time to sign up for the 2004 Oregon State University Extension Service Master Gardener Program, sched- uled to start on Jan. 8. The course of study will include vegetable gar- den management, land- scaping, plant disease, in- sects, management of soil and water, lawn and turf maintenance, fruit, nut and berry cultivation, growing herbs, and other related topics. The classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays for 12 succes- sive weeks. The classes are to be held at the Extension Au d i t o ri u m a t 2 1 5 Ringuette St., Grants Pass.
