Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, December 31, 2003 JoCo unemployment rate rises slightly up to 7.3% In Josephine County during November, total nonfarm payroll employ- ment fell by nearly 400 jobs, said Oregon Employ- ment Dept. During the past year, payroll employment has fallen by 50 jobs. The county’s reduction of 0.2 percent is much less than Oregon statewide, where payroll employment has declined by 1.9 percent since November 2002. Josephine County’s unemployment rate rose slightly, up from 7.2 per- cent the prior month to 7.3 percent in November. The mythical state of Jefferson appears to be holding up a little better during this re- covery from recession than the state of Oregon. Construction employ- ment fell by 60 jobs in No- vember, but has managed a gain of 50 during the past year. Manufacturing was little changed over the month, falling by slightly more than 20 over the year. Oregon, overall has lost nearly 2,000 manufac- turing jobs since Novem- ber 2002. Most of Josephine County’s industry sectors saw little change in em- ployment from October to November. The exceptions were leisure and hospital- ity and government, which shed 160 and 120 jobs, respectively. In November, federal (-30), state (-30) and local government edu- cation (-60) all had em- ployment declines. During the past year in Josephine County, private employment has risen by 310, while government jobs, including education, have fallen by 360. Other industries experiencing gains included wholesale trade (+90), retail trade (+90), financial activities (+20), and health care and social assistance (+90). Industries losing nota- ble jobs since November 2002 were wood products manufacturing (-200), pri- vate educational services (- 20), state government (- 40), federal government (- 30), and local government education (-200).
