Daniel B. Starks
Former Cave Junction
resident Daniel Brian
Starks, 58, died on Nov.
18, 2003 in Prescott, Ariz.
A memorial service
was held at the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints on Dec. 7.
Mr. Starks was born
on Dec. 19, 1944 in Cave
Junction in a log house
located across the street
from where I.V. Video is
now.
He attended grade
school in Kerby and gradu-
ated from Illinois Valley
High School in 1964. After
graduation he joined the
U.S. Navy and served a
tour of duty on the USS
“Bradley.” He was also a
Vietnam veteran and re-
ceived a Medal of Valor
for heroic efforts while
serving on a Swift boat.
Mr. Starks returned
home in October 1968 and
in March 1969 he married
Shirley Cooper of Kerby.
Growing up, Starks
was an active Boy Scout.
He enjoyed snow skiing,
fishing, bowling and pho-
tography. He built El Toro
sailboats with his family
and sailed them on Lake
Selmac.
He was a member of
the Shamrock Square
Dance Club and a longtime
active member of Illinois
Valley Lions Club.
He worked for the U.S.
Forest Service in the early
1970s and later he was in a
family business known as
Hill Top Myrtle Wood.
In 1987, he moved to
the San Diego area be-
cause of his job and his
health. He spent the last
year or so of his life in
Prescott, where he married
Judy Reed on July 15.
In Arizona he was a
member of the VFW and
the American Legion.
Survivors include his
wife, Judy Starks of Pres-
cott; a brother, Paul Starks
of Grants Pass; four sisters,
Marion McEntire of
Eugene, Kathy Gifford of
Bella Vista, Calif., Charo-
lett Hayhurst of Pipe
Creek, Texas, Joan Starks-
Welcome of Kerby; and
many nieces and nephews.
A son, Kevin Lynn
Starks, preceded him in
death.
93, of Salem died on Fri-
day, Nov. 28 at his home.
A graveside service
was held on Dec. 5. Hull &
Hull Funeral Directors was
in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Davis was born on
June 20, 1910 in Crooks-
ton, Minn. On June 25,
1935 in New Jersey, he
married Louise M. Strong,
who preceded him in
death.
He worked as a press-
man for a box company.
He moved to Grants Pass
in 1978 from Caldwell,
N.J. In 2002 he moved to
Salem from Grants Pass.
He was a member of
the West Essex F&AM
No. 40 in Caldwell since
1944 and a member of the
Scottish Rite since 1949.
He enjoyed wood-
working.
Survivors include his
three daughters, Nadine
Telschow of Selma,
Shirley Utchell of Little-
ton, Colo., and Dorothy
Migneron; his sister, Doro-
thy Hartzell of Long
Beach, Calif., six grand-
children and 10 great-
grandchildren.

Robert M. McGregor,
77, of Cave Junction died
on Saturday, Dec. 6 in
Grants Pass. Arrangements
are pending at Illinois Val-
ley Funeral Home.
Ilka A. Bennett, 85, of
Cave Junction died on
Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at
an area health care center.
No services are
planned. Hull and Hull
Funeral Directors is in
charge of arrangements.

was held on Monday, Dec.
8 at Eagle Point National
Cemetery with Nick Hall
conducting.
Mr. Love was born on
Dec. 26, 1947 in New
York City. He served his
country as a Marine Corps
veteran of the Vietnam
War. He was Native
American Indian. He set-
tled in Cave Junction 20
years ago.
He enjoyed the water,
mining and diving.
He is survived by four
sons, William Kirk; Robert
Sean; Ki (KL); and Kristo-
pher; a sister, Audrey Gal-
lant; and two grandsons,
all of Southern California.

1971, who preceded her in
death. She lived in Cave
Junction for 70 years. She
enjoyed gardening, the
outdoors and camping.
Survivors include three
sons, Steven and Timothy
Costner of Crescent City,
Calif. and John Costner of
O’Brien; a daughter, Gayla
Hampton of Guerneville,
Calif.; a brother, Robert
Pope of Ashland; four
grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

mayor added that people
speed and generally drive
recklessly in the city,
based on complaints.
He indicated that he
would like for the city dep-
uty to attend the next coun-
cil meeting.
After the meeting, the
mayor said, regarding only
four citations, “It just
seems asinine to me.”

Betty Jean Tayloe, 74,
of Grants Pass, died on
Monday, Dec. 8, at a
health care facility in
Grants Pass.
A memorial service

in Bartlesville, Okla. on
