Publish: Nov. 12, 19 The Savvy Senior By CAROL MARTIN Charles W. Jarvis, Chairman and Chief Executive of the United Seniors As- sociation, Inc., announced recently the USA Health Choice Freedom Campaign to stop the attempt by liberal Senators to so- cialize the nutritional and health industry. “Senators like Dick Durbin, Hillary Clinton, and other liberals want a new army of health nannies controlling our choices,” said Charles Jarvis. “They have mastered the art of manufacturing ‘crises’ so they can greatly expand the powers of Federal bureaucrats.” Senators Dick Durbin, Hillary Clin- ton, Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, and others are proposing legislation to create a new bureaucratic regulatory re- gime over the whole nutrition and health sector. Senate bill S.722, the Dietary Sup- plement Safety Act, would establish a new set of government regulations and pro- grams over all health supplements. "If Senators Durbin and Clinton get their way, American health will be harmed, not helped,” said Mr. Jarvis. “Americans need expanded health choices, not reduc- tion and bureaucracy.” The issue is controversial, however, and complex. Currently, people can pretty much buy any sort of nutritional supple- ment, diet aid, or vitamins from a health store. However, there's no oversight over what's actually in these products. For in- stance, we now know the dangers of ephedra in diet aids. Deaths have actually been attributed to it. As for vitamins, taking too many can be toxic. In general, people who are vita- min aficionados don't know what they're doing when they dose themselves. They think vitamins couldn't possibly be bad for them. They are sorely mistaken. No, I don't agree with a nationalized health care system. However, regulating what health food stores sell is beneficial to everyone.
