(Photo contributed) Christmas trees big Oregon business Between now and mid- December, approximately eight million Oregon Christmas trees will be harvested and sold locally, nationally, and internation- ally, according to Oregon Dept. of Agriculture (ODA). “By Nov. 1 most growers in Oregon are ready to go by the middle of November, it’s all in full swing,” said Bryan Ostlund, executive director of the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Associa- tion. Oregon remains the nation’s leading producer of Christmas trees. Added to the production of Wash- ington, the two states ac- count for nearly 12 million of the nation’s 23 million Christmas trees, according to industry statistics. But while the national production numbers have declined the past few years, Oregon Christmas tree sales have remained steady. All in all, markets are great for Oregon growers, both domestically and in- ternationally. Oregon’s reputation for quality trees helps too. Christmas trees generally grow a year or two faster in Oregon than other parts of the U.S. thanks to the climate and productive soils. That gives Oregon a competitive advantage, especially for the species grown in Oregon. “Douglas and Noble firs supply the lion’s share of the market,” Ostlund said. “The Noble fir has made great gains in mar- kets traditionally supplied by other states.” In recent years, Doug- las and Noble firs have accounted for more than 90 percent of all Christmas tree sales in Oregon. As the state’s sixth ranked agricultural com- modity valued at $160 mil- lion in 2002, Christmas trees will be moving fast and furious the next sev- eral weeks throughout the Willamette Valley and other production areas of the state.
