McGhee, 76, of Cave
Junction died on Monday,
Sept. 22, 2003 at Three
Rivers Community Hospi-
tal in Grants Pass.
A family gathering has
been held. Southern Ore-
gon Cremation Services
was in charge of arrange-
ments.
Mr. McGhee was born
on June 30, 1927 in Glen-
dale, Ark. He was the old-
est of six children. Two of
his childhood playmates
were Tommy and Johnny
Cash.
He started working at a
young age to help support
his family and continued to
work in the timber indus-
try. He was a big man,
known to many as “Uncle
Hoss.”
He enjoyed fishing,
panning for gold and coun-
try music, especially Hank
Williams Sr.
Survivors include three
children, Alfreda Hamilton
of Summerville, Miss.,
Terry McGhee of Cheha-
lis, Wash.; and James
McGhee Jr. of Stockton,
Calif.; three brothers,
Chester and Ernie McGhee
of Cave Junction, Art
McGhee of Grants Pass,
and his sister Judy Shrop-
shire of Weed, Calif.

A graveside service
will be held at 11 a.m. on
Friday, Oct. 10 at Laurel
Cemetery in Cave Junction
for Claude L. Germain, 90,
of Cave Junction, who died
on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003
in a Grants Pass facility.
Officiating will be Fa-
ther Harry Howell of St.
Patrick of the Forest
Catholic Church in Cave
Junction.
Mr. Germain was born
on Feb. 14, 1913 in Ingle-
wood, Calif. He moved to
Illinois Valley in 1974
from Hawthorne, Calif.
He was a member of
Cave Dwellers RV Club
and Good Sams. He en-
joyed bird watching. He
was known, said his fam-
ily, for his kindness and
being a good father.
Surviving are his son,
Paul Brickey of Cave
Junction; a sister, Frances
Curry of Crescent City,
Calif.; and three grandchil-
dren. His wife, Ethel, died
in August 1990.
The family suggests
memorial donations to
Lovejoy Hospice. Funeral
arrangements are under
direction of Illinois Valley
Funeral Home.
James O’Donnell
A private service was
arranged through Illinois
Valley Funeral Home for
James Cornelius O’Don-
nell, 83, of Cave Junction,
who died on Oct. 6, 2003
at home.
Mr. O’Donnell was
born on Sept. 13, 1920 in
Havre, Mont. He attended
the U.S. Maritime Acad-
emy and served during
World War II with the
Merchant Marines. He also
was a rancher in Montana,
but returned to the sea and
retired at the age of 65.
He is survived by two
sisters, Elaine Garnand of
Phoenix, Ariz., and Jane
Blackman of American
Canyon, Calif.; and many
nieces and nephews. He
also leaves behind his part-
ner of 20 years, Jean Weiss
of Cave Junction.
Man’s feet are his
destiny: they lead him to

Time, the Gospel reading
for the 28th Sunday will be
from Mark, Chapter10
where Jesus answers peo-
ple’s questions about what
they must do to inherit
eternal life.
His word were, “It is
easier for a camel to pass
through eye of a needle
that for one who is rich to
enter the kingdom of
God.” Jesus also told the
people, “For human beings
it is impossible, but not for
God. All things are possi-
ble for God. Thus, we all
will need God’s help on
our journey if we are to
inherit eternal life.”
GOOD DAY FOR PRAISE- Approximately 100 persons
attended an all-congregations service at Bridgeview
Community Church on Sunday evening, Oct. 5 with
Bridgeview Pastor Charles Bridges presiding. Atten-
dees sang several praise and worship songs; then
heard a sermon by Bridges. The evening concluded
with a pie and cake auction to benefit Living Alterna-
tives in Downtown Cave Junction. Bridges said that
the organization has been helping numerous women,
but that it is exceeding its fundings by $400 per
month, and that donations would be gratefully ac-
cepted.
Workshop to
teach skills in
giving care
Lovejoy Hospice and
Home Medical Inc. will
offer a “Caregiver 101
Workshop” on Saturday,
Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. at the Lovejoy office,
939 8th St., Grants Pass.
The workshop is open
to anyone who is, or will
be, caring for someone at
home. The focus will be
teaching participants
hands-on patient care
skills.
“We’ll cover topics
from independence to total
care of a patient,” said Judi
Hill, hospice nurse and
workshop developer.
“Caring for a loved
one at home can be chal-
lenging. Skills in total pa-
tient care, such as bathing,
are taught and practiced at
the Caregiver 101 Work-
shop,” she said.
A workbook will be
provided for each regis-
tered participant. Pre-
registrations will be ac-
cepted until Friday, Oct.
