Landfill fees provide grants for recycling For the 13th year, the Oregon Department of En- vironmental Quality (DEQ) is offering solid waster reduction, recycling and household hazardous waste grants to area gov- ernments statewide. All grant monies come from fees charged for dumping garbage at landfills throughout the state. The year’s focus is commercial waster preven- tion and reuse. DEQ will give preference points for focus-area projects that have measurable results. “Commercial” includes stores, offices, restaurants, warehouses, schools, col- leges, universities, hospi- tals, and other non- manufacturing entities, but does not include other manufacturing or residen- tial-based businesses, manufacturing or process- ing activities. Any area government in Oregon responsible for solid waster management is eligible to apply, includ- ing cities, counties, metro- politan service districts, tribes, sanitary districts and county service dis- tricts. DEQ expects to an- nounce grant recipients in January 2004. Dreams are the touchstones of our characters. - Henry David Thoreau - Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, July 9, 2003
