Fourth of July loaded with fire danger
Like others in the
USA, Oregon residents
celebrate the Fourth of
July with fire.
Humble sparklers, the
soaring pyrotechnics of
co mmunit y displays,
campfire cookouts and the
use of recreational vehicles
sometimes invite an un-
welcome guest on Inde-
pendence Day: wildfire.
Oregon’s fire statistics
record numerous blazes
started by fireworks, open
fires and off-road vehicles,
often clustered around the
July 4 weekend. Here are
some safety tips to follow.
Fireworks and the for-
est simply don’t mix. This
time of year the trees,
shrubs and grass combine
to make a fuel bed ready
for ignition by an errant
spark. The specter of li-
ability looms over a fire
started by a careless act,
even a child's.
An open fire requires
constant attention. Before
leaving a campsite, even
for a few minutes, put the
fire out. Staying in a desig-
nated campground is the
best way to have a safe and
legal campfire. No smoke
equals no fire is a faulty
equation. It could still be
smoldering under the sur-
face ashes, only to be re-
kindled later by a breeze.
Smoking in the forests
puts the lives of trees at
risk. Smokers should re-
strict lighting up to inside a
closed vehicle or building.
During periods of high fire
danger, this good idea be-

comes the law.
There’s also a liability
for tossing a butt out of the
car. Wildland fire investi-
gators have made many
successful cases based on
the remains of a cigarette
found at the scene.
For many Oregonians,
forest recreation is a mo-
torized experience. But off
the road, the catalytic con-
verter of an SUV and the
muffler of a motorcycle or
quad pose a fire threat. In
summer, avoid driving or
riding in tall grass. Check
the catalytic converter for
wear, and clear any grass
or twigs that have accumu-
lated on or near it. The
spark arrester on an all-
terrain vehicle should also
be checked for proper
function. Always carry a
fire extinguisher. During
high fire danger, resource
agencies restrict motorized
travel to established
roads.
