Lost five days in wilderness,
Cave Junction man located

accident with two vehicles
near the intersection of Red-
wood Hwy. and O’Brien Road
at 2:48 a.m. Deputies were
unable to locate an accident in
that area.
*A man reported that a
customer found a burnt gray
T-shirt with diesel fuel on it
behind his business in the
1000 block of Caves Hwy. at
8:14 a.m.
*A man in the 5200 block
of Dick George Road said that
a woman who had been
evicted three months ago was
trespassing on his property at
11:56 a.m.
*Deputies contacted OSP
after receiving a complaint of
a silver car passing on the
right and weaving in and out
of traffic in the 23500 block of
Redwood Hwy. at 1:56 p.m.
*Jefrey Vernell Couick,
44, was cited on a charge of
DWS at 2 p.m. near the inter-
section of Redwood Hwy. and
Hamilton Avenue.
*A man said that he was
being stalked at home, work
and over the phone by his ex-
wife on Dogwood Lane.
*Another citizen called at
2:04 p.m. to report a silver car
passing unsafely and speeding
in the 21000 block of Red-
wood Hwy.
*A woman said that she
suffered a scraped elbow
when she was assaulted by
another woman at a wedding
reception on Warren Road.
*In the 500 block of Udee
Road a woman said that a man
from a tree-trimming service
told her he was going to
“terrorize” her at 7:11 p.m. if
she didn’t give him more
money for cutting her trees.
*Kenneth
James
Halverson, 36, was cited and
released on a charge of DWS
at 8:12 p.m.
*A woman returned a sto-
len sign to deputies in the
6000 block of Rockydale
Road.
*In the 500 block of S.
Redwood Hwy. a transient
refused to leave a restaurant
due to rain. Deputies warned
the man for trespassing.
*Deputies received a re-
port of an armed fugitive liv-
ing by the river in a mobile
home in the 600 block of Pine
Cone Drive. He was not home
when deputies checked the
property.
*A woman said that a man
violated his restraining order
when he approached her, gave
her the finger and yelled pro-
fanities at her in the 200 block
of Watkins Street. Deputies
contacted the man, who said
she had the story reversed.
*In the 18000 block of
Redwood Hwy. a woman was
taken to Three Rivers Hospital
after complaining of abdomi-
nal pain.
*A woman said that two
people on dirt bikes were rid-
ing up and down Schumacher
Street at 4:04 p.m. Deputies
did not locate any motorcy-
clists.
*At the intersection of
River Street and N. Junction
Avenue a vehicle was stuck in
a ditch at 4:50 p.m.
*In the 8000 block of
Deer Creek Road a man said
that someone was camping
and possibly dumping trash
near his property. Deputies
notified Bureau of Land Man-
agement deputies.
*A man reported at 5:14
p.m. that another man threat-
ened him the night before at a
Cave Junction business.
*In the 100 block of S.
Sawyer Avenue a woman
complained that a man in a
silver vehicle passed her
house going 75 mph. Deputies
warned the man.
*Jennifer Jo Brown, 38,
was cited and released on a
charge of harassment at 8:12
p.m. in the 5000 block of Dick
George Road.
Saturday, May 31
*In the 28000 block of
Redwood Hwy. a woman
complained that a man was
threatening to shoot and stab
people in some rental units.
*Deputies tried unsuc-
cessfully to discover the
source of reported gun shots
off Eight Dollar Mountain
Road at 7:07 p.m.
*In the 5000 block of
Takilma Road a citizen com-
plained that someone dam-
aged her lock when they at-
tempted to enter her residence.
*A woman said that a man
in the 400 block of Brown
Road tried to sic his dog on
her because he said she was
on private property.
*Raymond Jones, 74, was
cited on a charge of speeding
at 7:58 p.m. near the intersec-
tion of Rockydale Road and
Redwood Hwy.
*Deputies dispersed some
youngsters and seized a keg of
beer at Store Gulch out Illi-
nois River Road at 8:51 p.m.
*A woman in the 300
block of Kerby Avenue said
that she was being harassed
over the phone at 9:18 p.m.
*In the 1800 block of
Laurel Road a citizen said a
male and female were shout-
ing at each other in the middle
of the road and someone was
pushed over. Deputies found
no one at the location.
*A citizen reported a sus-
picious man was sitting on
the steps behind a CJ store at
3:42 p.m.
*In the 900 block of Lake-
shore Drive a man said that
his neighbor’s dog continually
enters his property to mate
with his dog. Deputies for-
warded the complaint to Ani-
mal Control.
*A woman was crying on
the phone after she got in a
fight with her boyfriend in the
1800 block of Laurel Road.
The boyfriend left the resi-
dence to cool off and was later
advised, deputies said.
*In the 24000 block of
Redwood Hwy. a woman said
that someone failed to return
her vehicle. She called back to
say the vehicle was returned.
No charges were filed, depu-
ties said.
*At Store Gulch, Matthew
Joseph Durbin, 20, Tanya
Suzanne Lexin, 17, and Clay-
ton Leonard Rochholz, 20,
each were cited and released
on a charge of minor in pos-
session of alcohol.
Sunday, June 1
*Deputies advised ODOT
that a stop sign was down in
the road near the intersection
of Redwood Hwy. and Laurel
Road at 4:10 a.m.
*Another stop sign was
down at the intersection of
Glendon Road and Redwood
Hwy. at 4:46 a.m.
*A stop sign was also re-
ported down at the intersec-
tion of Waldo Road and
Rockydale Road at 7:53 a.m.
*A woman at Shop Smart
said that a car with keys and
an address book on the pas-
senger’s seat was parked on
the parking lot. Deputies said
they notified a rental car com-
pany in Oakland, Calif.
*In the 300 block of N.
Hussey Avenue a woman said
that she was having an argu-
ment over a personal issue
with her husband. They
worked out their differences,
deputies said.
*Stop signs were report-
edly knocked over at the inter-
sections of Rockydale and
Waldo roads and Rockydale
and Takilma roads.
*Deputies spoke with an
intoxicated man who was seen
relieving himself at the top of
Hay’s Hill at 2:16 p.m. The
man was hitchhiking.
*A stop sign, “radar en-
forced” and “25 mph” sign
were all knocked down on E.
River and Old Stage roads at
2:16 p.m.
*A 10-year-old boy suf-
fered a deep gash below one
knee in an ATV accident near
O’Brien Road at 2:56 p.m. He
was transported to Three Riv-
ers Hospital by American
Medical Response.
*A man reported that
$400 worth of fencing materi-
als was missing from a resi-
dence in the 700 block of Air-
port Drive. Deputies said that
an unknown suspect entered
through a window and exited
through the door of the build-
ing.
*Deputies checked on a
house due to an audible alarm
in the 32500 block of Red-
wood Hwy. at 3:56 p.m.
*A man reported that the
house in the 32500 block of
Redwood Hwy. was broken
into, but that nothing was
missing at 7:15 p.m.
*A woman in the 500
block of Udee Road said she
took more than 60 pills and
was feeling funny at 8:13 p.m.
Valley emergency personnel
assisted the woman.
Monday, June 2
*Broken beer bottles
were around and inside a vehi-
cle parked on the sidewalk
and pushed against a bent stop
sign at Illinois Valley High
School. Another vehicle was
abandoned on the football
field. Deputies said they pho-
tographed the vehicles.
*A woman said that her
son was missing after they got
into an argument in the 500
block of S. Old Stage Road.
*In the 3000 block of
Caves Hwy. a woman said
that a man followed her home
from a friend’s house and at-
tacked her at 2:42 a.m. She
said the man kicked her in the
back, knocked her down,
scratched her and tried to
choke her before taking her
coin collection and composi-
tion book. She claimed that he
called her and made threaten-
ing statements like, “It’s over.
It’s done. Pulling the plug.”
*Billy Mark McReynolds,
55, was cited and released on
a charge of assault IV and
theft III on the parking lot of
Dairy Queen in Downtown
Cave Junction at 7:14 a.m. for
allegedly assaulting and har-
assing the above woman.
*A man said that items for
a yard sale were missing in the
200 block of O’Brien Road.
*A citizen said that sev-
eral items valued at more than
$200, including an air com-
pressor, and palm nailer, were
missing from Lorna Byrne
Middle School at 8:25 a.m.
*At Lake Selmac a man
said that someone drove his
electric-powered cart across
some lawns and into the lake.
The dollar amount of damage
was pending, deputies said.
*A woman said that a man
driving a silver car was speed-
ing around her neighborhood
and almost hit some people on
Kerby Avenue.
*At Selma Select Market
parking lot a man reported
that a plastic lei valued at
$1.99 was missing from his
rearview mirror at 8:34 p.m.
*A woman said that 10
young adults were hanging out
in front of Puff-N-Stuff and
the state liquor store in Down-
town Cave Junction. Deputies
reported the subjects were
gone when they arrived.
Don’t
drink
and drive
A Cave Junction man
missing in the wilderness for
five days has been found.
Timothy Strunk Yost, 62,
told friends he was going to be
visiting a casino on the coast
on May 30, but friends be-
came worried when he did not
return home as anticipated.
He was reported missing
on Monday, June 2. On
Wednesday, June 4, Yost’s
vehicle was reported to be
parked at the Babyfoot Lake
trailhead approximately 17
miles northwest of Cave Junc-
tion out Eight Dollar Road.
Deputies responded that
evening and confirmed that it
was his vehicle. It was locked,
and there was no sign of Yost.
Search operations were
conducted in the area during a
three-day period. Members
involved in the search in-
cluded Josephine County
Search and Rescue including a
dive team and K-9 team, sher-
iff's office and Mounted
Posse, Curry County Sheriff’s
Office and Search and Rescue,
Jackson County and Lane
County K-9 teams, Air Na-
tional Guard, American Red

Cora Mae Henderson, 82,
of Grants Pass, died on Satur-
day June 7, 2003 at Three
Rivers Community Hospital.
A memorial service will
be held at 1 p.m. on Friday,
June 13, at Hull & Hull

Mrs. Henderson was born
on Jan. 7, 1921 in Kirkland,
Texas. In 1961 she moved to
Cave Junction from Texas.

River near Miami Bar heard a
cry for help from Yost.
He was found tired and
dehydrated, but otherwise in
good health.
One of the rafters floated
down to Oak Flat to phone
911.
American Medical Re-
sponse, U.S. Forest Service
and Josephine County Sher-
iff’s Office responded, and
after a medical evaluation, a
sheriff’s deputy took Yost to
his residence.
Yost said that he went to
the area to see Babyfoot Lake
and had become lost within
the first hour.
Along his journey, he vis-
ited such places as the Chetco
River and Pearsoll Peak.
Unofficial reports indicate
that it is easy to become lost
in such wilderness areas, par-
ticularly because of the burned
areas after last year’s Biscuit
Fire.
Those in such areas can
easily become disoriented.
