Page 11 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, May 14, 2003 Carrie Ann Fowler Carrie Ann Fowler, 20, of Kerby, died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at Three Rivers Commu- nity Hospital. Private services will be held. Arrangements were made through Illinois Valley Funeral Home. Ms. Fowler was born on June 2, 1982 in Medford. She moved to Illinois Valley four years ago, from the Applegate Valley. She attended Bridge- view Community Church. She attended New Hope Christian Academy, and graduated from Illinois Valley High School in 2000. She vol- unteered at area hospitals. She is survived by her father, George L. Fowler, of Brookings; her mother, Gayla Thoms, of Kerby; and step- father, William Thoms, of Kerby; grandparents, Wayne and Dolores Franklin of Kerby; a brother, Christopher Conn of Cave Junction; a sis- ter, Cassandra Conn of Kerby; and an aunt. There she met Chester Meengs, whom she married while he attended the Western Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church of America (RCA). They ministered to- gether in Michigan, Illinois, Alabama and Wisconsin. She was a teacher. After Rev. Meengs’ death in 1974, she continued speak- ing for racial equality. She served the National Leader- ship team for women’s work for the RCA, eventually as president. She retired to St. Peters- burg, Fl., in 1981, but contin- ued to work as a hospital chaplain. In 1992, she was honored for 55 years of Christian Min- istry by the RCA in which she is an ordained Elder. She is survived by a son; John Meengs and daughter Alyce Kendall, both of Cave Junction; daughter, Marcia Meengs of New York; seven grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. A private service was held. The family suggests dona- tions to the Jim Brown Ath- letic Scholastic Scholarship Fund, in care of SOFCU. Mr. Brown was born on Dec. 26, 1949 in Glendale, Calif. He was a U.S. Army vet- eran of the Vietnam War and received the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Com- mendation Medal for Valor. He married Patricia Sam- uel on Aug. 10, 1972. He moved to O’Brien in 1972. He enjoyed landscaping, horses, sports and artistic de- signing and owned and oper- ated Brown’s Silkscreen in O’Brien. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Louise E. Brown, a son, Beau Brown, of O’Brien; two daughters, Wendy Zabriskie of Cave Junction, and Karyn Elias of Roseburg; and four grandchildren. Debra Jean O’Neill Debra Jean O’Neill, 48, of Cave Junction, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at her home. A memorial service was held on Monday, May 12. She was born on January 18, 1955 in Glendale, Calif. She worked as a correctional officer at the state prison in Tehachapi, Calif. In 1983 she moved to Cave Junction from Phelan, Calif. She started work at Pelican Bay State Prison in 1983 and was still employed by the prison. She enjoyed dogs, horses, snakes and cats and breeding Chihua- huas. Survivors include two sons, Jeremy Newsom of Gold Hill; and David Newsome of Redding, Calif; her father, Daniel Joseph “D.J.” O’Neil, and her brother, Danny O’Neill, both of Sunland/ Tujunja, Calif; her sister, Peggy O’Neill of Arizona; and three grandchildren. Gertrude Meengs Gertrude Meengs, 89, of Cave Junction, died on Wednesday, May 7 at her home. There will be a celebra- tion of her life at he Commu- nity Bible Church in Cave Junction, where she was a member, at 3 p.m. on Sunday May, 18. She will be buried in Byron Center Mich., next to Rev.
