March wind
blew ill for
jobs scene
Five of Oregon’s 31 local
labor market areas lost jobs in
March and 24 gained jobs, a
result better than in March
2001 but not as positive as in
March 2002.
The biggest losses were in
Josephine County (-150) and
Hood River County (-130).
Oregon’s non-farm pay-
roll employment was up by
1,600 jobs in March, about
4,900 less than normal for the
month. Big gainers included
Jackson County (+650 jobs),
the Salem metro area (+500),
Benton County (+490), and
the Portland metro area
(+300).
Josephine County’s em-
ployment dropped by 150 jobs
overall, while wood product
manufacturing lost 200 jobs.
Jackson County added 650
jobs in March, mostly in retail
trade and leisure and accom-
modations; this gain was close
to normal for the month.
Curry County added 30
jobs last month in leisure and
hospitality. Coos County had
no change in total jobs in
March, while shedding 60
food manufacturing jobs and
gaining 70 retail trade jobs.
