Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Page 12 Oakview arson suspect under arrest after tip A tip from a Grants Pass High School security officer led detectives to arrest a high school student believed in- volved with the $6 million March 6 fire at 410 N.E. Anderson St. in Grants Pass, which destroyed Oakview Re- tirement Facility and the Jas- mine Park building. The fire totally consumed the Jasmine Park building which was under construction. Due to intense heat and prox- imity to the fire, the Oakview Retirement Facility also caught fire. More than 60 residents were evacuated with no seri- ous injury or death. Several residents, firefighters and po- lice officers suffered smoke inhalation. Due to fire, smoke, and water damage, Oakview Retirement Facility was de- clared a total loss. Damage to Jasmine Park and Oakview Gardens Retire- ment Facilities was estimated at more than $6 million. Since the fire, detectives from the Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety (GPDPS) have been following up on numer- ous tips and leads concerning th Anderson fire, which had been classified as arson. More than 60 interviews were com- pleted by detectives, which eventually led to the suspect. The suspect, whose name was not made public, made a statement to the Grants Pass High School security officer concerning his whereabouts during the fire, which the se- curity officer believed to be suspicious, said GPDPS. Detectives interviewed the student, and subsequently con- centrated their investigation on the suspect’s statements. Following a second interview with the suspect, he was ar- rested, and lodged at the Jose- phine County Juvenile Justice Center.
