It’s the family’s wish that memorial contributions be made to the Elks Piggy Bank Fund at the Grants Pass Elks Lodge, 207 SW K St., which supports medical rehabilita- tion for adults and children. Mr. Collins was born on Feb. 20, 1916, in Tipton, Iowa to Bessie B. Knott and Waring S. Collins. He was raised in Murphys and Angles Camp, Calif. until his family moved to Martinez, Calif., where he graduated from Alhambra High School. He attended Bay Area col- leges, and taught law enforce- ment courses. He was a lieutenant for the City of Richmond, Calif. Police Dept., retiring in 1967 after 25 years of service. Prior to the police department, Collins worked at Ortho Chemical Company in Rich- mond. He moved to the Illi- nois Valley in 1968. On March 18, 1988 at Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass, he married the former Wanda M. Brown, who survives. He was a member of the Elks BPOE for 57 years in the Richmond and Grants Pass lodges. He was a member of the Lamba Phi Epsilon frater- nity in Berkeley, Calif. He enjoyed his family, gardening, and excelled at fudge making. Besides his wife, Wanda Brown Collins of O’Brien, survivors include a son, Sam- uel Steven Collins, of Red Bluff, Calif.; a daughter, Jeannie Grabarz, of O’Brien; six grandchildren; and two nephews. The national observance runs concurrently with a two- week “Three Flags Cam- paign” enforcement blitz, scheduled February 10-23. Both are good reasons to make sure children are riding in properly installed, federally approved child safety or booster seats as required by Oregon law. During the Three Flags blitz, 26 county sheriff’s de- partments, 71 city police de- partments and the Oregon State Police will set up en- forcement of safety belt and child safety seat laws. In Oregon, drivers are responsible for making sure their passengers younger than age 15 are correctly restrained in a safety belt or child safety seat. The law also requires that children between 4-and 6- years-old and weighing be- tween 40 and 60 lbs. ride in booster seats which elevate them so the lap/shoulder belt fits correctly. Children younger than 4 or weighing less tan 40 pounds must be in child safety seats. National Child Passenger Safety Week’s education cam- paign promotes the following “4 Steps for Kids” from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. 1. Rear-facing seats in the back seat from birth to at least one- year-old and 20 pounds, longer if pos- sible. 2. Forward-facing tod- dler seats in back seat from age one to ap- proximately age four and 20 to 40 pounds. 3. Booster seats in the back seat from ap- proximately age four and 40 pounds, until the seat belt fits cor- rectly, usually at least age 8 or 4-feet, 9- inches. 4. Seat belts at age eight or older, or taller than 4-feet, 9-inches. 5. All children 12 and younger should ride in the back seat. While these national rec- ommendations emphasize the importance of back seating and proper types of child re- straints, Levinski adds that it is equally important for driv- ers to properly use and main- tain their vehicle safety belt systems. For more information on safety belts, phone Oregon Dept. of Transportation, Transportation Safety Divi- sion at (800) 922-2022 or www.odot.state.or.us.transafet y. For more information on child safety seats, contact the Oregon Child Safety Seat Re- source Center at (800) 772- 1 3 1 5 , o r v i s i t www.childsafetyseat.org. The Resource Center helps low- income families obtain new safety seats; provides informa- tion on used or recalled seats; and provides hands-on assis- tance with selecting and prop- erly installing seats. St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church On Sunday, Feb. 2 we celebrated the Presentation of the Lord. When Mary and Jo- seph took Jesus up to the tem- ple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as was their Jewish custom, a holy man, named Simeon, inspired by the Holy Spirit, recognized Jesus as the Messiah, took him in his arms and said, “Now, Master, you may let your ser- vant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” If only we could see as Simeon saw. Not only is Jesus present in the Scriptures, he is present with us, in and through others - our spouses, children, friends, and even our enemies. Sometimes he is eas- ily recognizable in others; and sometimes we need extra help from the Holy Spirit to see Jesus in other people. We know that the Holy Spirit comes to us in baptism. So if we are living our lives accord- ing to Christian teaching, it should be easy for people to recognize Jesus in us. Community Bible Church On this communion Sun- day, several people offered testimonies or praise for some powerful experiences they have had. Dr. Blackburn ac- knowledged President Bush saying the astronauts did not land, but they did go home. Dr. Blackburn’s message was from Isaiah 53, telling us that Jesus carried the sorrows of the world. He was well ac- quainted with grief and sick- ness and He came to comfort all who mourn. 1 Peter reveals that Christ suffered for the just Professional Cleaning & Window Washing Over 20 Years Experience Caretaking - Care Giving - Critters, too! Jo- nah was a trusted prophet of God to whom the word of the Lord came. The Lord sent him to warn the people of Nineveh of the city’s impending de- struction. Jonah did not want to warn Nineveh, a Gentile city of Assyria, because they were Israel’s enemy. Nineveh was 500 miles overland on the banks of the Tigris River. Jo- nah went in the opposite di- rection thus defying God. He feared the Assyrians, but he also knew the power of God and believed that the Assyr- ians would repent. After boarding a ship to Tarshish in Spain a terrible storm came up and he was cast into the sea by the fright- ened sailors. After his horren- dous experience with the whale, Jonah hurried back and preached repentance to the people of Nineveh and they repented. God answers the prayers of those who call upon him. Valley Evangelical Free Valley Evangelical Free is looking forward to the dedica- tion of their new home on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Sunday, Feb. 2 worship service was part of this anticipation, using 1 Kings 8: 23-30 (the record of Solomon dedicating the temple) and 1 Cor. 3:10-17. The sermon highlighted Paul’s teaching that the Holy Spirit dwells in each member of the congregation (1Cor.6:19), resulting in Paul’s statement, “God’s tem- ple is holy, and you are that temple” (1Cor. 3:17). God was present in the temple Solomon built, but His Holy Spirit makes every Christian congregation God’s temple. Hence when Valley Evangeli- cal Free Church asks God to dedicate the new building for His exclusive use and glory, the congregation should also dedicate themselves to be used solely for God’s use and glory. Seventh-Day Adventists Dr. Floyd Bresee of Cen- tral Point conducted a three- part revival over the weekend. His first sermon at the Friday vesper service centered on the apostle, Andrew, who is typi- cal of people who speak by their quiet influence to bring family and friends to Jesus. Next, Dr. Bresee spoke about how the church can best accomplish its mission. Each member, he said, is given at least one of the 20 gifts of the Spirit mentioned in the Bible. He said the church body functions best when all mem- bers exercise their gifts “for common good, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God….” In the final sermon, Dr. Bresee explained that the early fall or spring rain mentioned in Joel 2:23. The early rain represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Chris- tian church on Pentecost, while the latter rain typifies the outpouring during the end of times. The climax to the revival was a special celebration of the Communion Service con- ducted by the church pastor assisted by the elders, deacons and deaconesses.
