January’s theme, “Epi-
phany (the manifestation of
what Jesus should mean to
us) began with Luke 2:41-52.
Mary and Joseph thought
Jesus was lost, believing
theirs was the normal parent-
child relationship, not living
in the light of the miracles
and prophecies they knew
regarding Jesus.
When they found Him,
Mary asked why He had
caused them such anxiety.
His answer implied they
should not have been looking
all over Jerusalem, but should
have known He would have
been in the temple; He called
it “My Father’s house.”
Even then Mary and Jo-
seph did not understand, a
kind of misunderstanding
possible for all believers,
when they do not attend to
Jesus’ utterly unique role as
God-man and Savior.

300 years, and he pleased
God by his faith. Moses also
pleased God, and the Angel
of the Lord appeared to him
from a burning bush, and
God spoke to Moses who
replied, “Here I am,:
Romans 12 tells us to
present our bodies as a living
sacrifice holy and pleasing to
God. We must worship God
in holiness and truth. In re-
turn we will receive the fruits
of the Holy Spirit., i.e., love,
joy, peace, long-suffering,
kindness, goodness and faith-
fulness, gentleness and self
control.

written the three epistles,
John 1, 2, and 3.
Revelation also has been
attributed to him, but the dif-
ference in style and tone casts

Its epistles are dated late 1st
century, between 70 and 101.
The theme stated in John
20:31, “written that you may
believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God and
that believing you may have
life in his name.”

“Epiphany,” for example,
“ a p p e a r a n c e , ”
“manifestation,” “coming to
light.”
It is appropriate to have a
reading from Isaiah 60 on the
Feast of Epiphany, “Rise up
in splendor, Jerusalem! Your
light has come, the glory of
the Lord shines upon you.”
The Gospel reading from
Matthew 2 was about a light
in the sky that the Magi fol-
lowed: … “We saw His star
at its rising and have come to
do him Homage.” Also in
Matthew 5, Jesus, in His ser-
mon on the Mount said, “You
are the light of the
world...Your light must shine
before others, that they may
see your good deeds and glo-
rify your heavenly Father.”
Each of us, by letting our
light shine, can resolve in this
new year to be a light to
those with whom we live,
work, play and pray with.

inspiration for Pastor Harold
Premdas’ sermon titled, “God
is Neither Dead nor Sleep-
ing.”

shared in the human experi-
ence of feeling abandoned by
God.” David who complained
that his troubles were reach-
ing up his neck (Psalm 69:1-
4); Elijah who reached the
pits of discouragement and
begged to die (I Kings 19:1-
4).
Job, who cursed the day
of his birth when his life was
decimated by disastrous mis-
fortunes (Job 3:1); Paul who
prayed earnestly to be rid of
the “thorn in his flesh,” only
to hear God tell him, “My
Grace is sufficient for
you” (II Corinthians 12:7-9).
Jesus promised in Luke
12:6,7 that the lowly sparrow
does not fall to the ground in
death without the knowledge
of the Father. From Psalm
121 we receive the assurance,
He who keeps you will not
slumber.

what we hear about with the
start of a new year, but will it
be different from last year?
Will we be different because
a date on the calendar
changed, showing the year
2003?
How can we change this
pattern into a new beginning?
First, by remembering that
the Christ child was born for
us, to give us a chance at a
new beginning by believing
in Him and changing our
ways.
Will we take advantage
of that opportunity for a new
beginning, or will we con-
tinue as we have in the past,
mired in our sinful ways?
