Page 6 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, December 11, 2002 Season’s Greetings Valley Evangelical Free The theme of, “God Be- came Man” continued with Phil 2:5-22, which stresses that Jesus was fully Goad and fully human; which stresses that Jesus gave up the exercise of His divinity in order to live an authentic human life. We won’t know what Jesus looked like to those he met. The Bible does not make him look like a movie star, for example, Isa. 53:2: “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His ap- pearance that we should desire Him.” But what is really impor- tant? What He did for us He “made Himself nothing, tak- ing the very nature of a ser- vant...He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross: (Phil. 2:7-8). Christians will rise to meet Him in Heaven. Good Shepherd Lutheran Good News! As defined in biblical times, “Good News” referred to an acclama- tion such as: “We won!”; it meant to elicit a positive, ex- cited response from people. Some, hearing of the “Good News” misinterpreted it to mean a great military victory had been won. But the good news John the Baptist proclaimed and the gospels recorded in the Bible referred to the arrival of the savior of the world. What is our role in this proclamation, other than as recipients of God’s mercy? We are to share the story of Jesus with others, to live the life of a Christian, and ulti- mately pay the price of carry- ing the cross of Jesus. Community Bible Continuing in Gen. 4, Dr. Don Blackburn discussed Cain’s refusal to repent and to confess Abel’s murder. God offered His grace, but Cain refused, so the Lord put His mark on Cain and he was sent out from the presence of the Lord. Isaiah 1:18 says, “come now and let us reason together says the Lord and I will make your scarlet sins as white as snow. Ezekiel states God does not take delight in any sinner dying apart from God. I John tells us if we con- fess our sins, God dwells in us through the Holy Spirit. He is faithful and will forgive us and cleanse us from all un- righteousness. Jesus died for us and He appears for us in God’s pres- ence and to whose who await Him. Immanuel United Methodist Pastor David Goodrich based his sermon on Mark 1:1-8 and II Peter 3:8-15a, Baptism of Repentance. John the Baptist appeared proclaiming the coming of the Messiah. He began preaching a baptism or repentance, peo- ple were hungry for a word from God. John proclaimed that the One is coming, announcing Jesus’ imminent arrival. No one knows the time of His coming and there is still time to turn away from sin and turn toward God. I.V. Garden Club “An Old Fashion Christ- mas” will be the theme for the annual Illinois Valley Garden Club’s Christmas Party and Silver Tea on Friday. Dec. 20. The party will begin at noon and will be at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 200 W. Watkins St., Cave Junc- tion. Bring finger foods to share. There will be a gift ex- change with a $5.00 limit. Hostesses will be Dorothy Wiltfong, Angela Drevenstedt, and Joan Welcome. II Peter was written near the end of Nero’s persecution of Christian believers. Peter’s focus is on the return of Jesus and the implications of his delay. St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church As the focus changes from wait and watch to repent, per- haps we should reflect on what repent means. Many of us associate it with confessing our sins, but it means to change ones mind. John the Baptist’s call to repentance is not just a call to confess our sin, it is a call for us to change our minds about something. Advent calls us to move past the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas and re- member that God is the center of our season. Even more, it reminds us is that God in not only with us, be we have the promise that Jesus is going to come again. Repenting means accept- ing the belief in the Second Coming and changing what needs changed in our lives to reflect this belief. When we prepare for Christmas we do more than get ready for Dec. 25. Isaiah expresses it as, “Here come with power the Lord God, who rules by His strong arm.” Seventh-day Adventist Seventh-day Adventists around the world celebrate a Week of Prayer in the fall. The congregation chose Dec. 7 to 14 to observe this event, and are conducting meetings nightly to assist members who seek a closer relationship with God. Articles prepared for this year focus on worship. The first in the series pre- sented Saturday addressed the question, “Whom Do We Worship?” It amplified the conversation between the dis- ciple Philip and the Lord in John 14:8,9. The human family devel- oped a picture of God as re- mote, cold, distant and de- manding before whom people trembled lest they transgress. Jesus, however, directed us to a Being perfect in holiness and majesty, yet tender and compassionate.” FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF SELMA 18285 Redwood Hwy.
